Thaipusam, also known as Thaipooyam or Thai Poosam, is a major Hindu
festival celebrated mainly in South India. Thaipusam festival
commemorates the birthday of Lord Murugan or Lord Subramanya and the
occasion when Goddess Parvati gave Murugan a Vel (spear) to defeat the
evil demon Soorapadman. Thai Pusam festival falls on the full moon day
in the Tamil month of Thai (mid January - mid February). On this day
special puja, abhishekam, yagna, archana and deeparadhanai is held for
Lord Muruga. Many devotees fast in this day and take Kavadi, Pal
Kuddam and do padayatra (walk) to Lord Muruga Temples. Chanting of
Lord Muruga hymns and playing of percussion instruments by devotees
can be seen in temples.

The First Akhand Ramayan Path 24 Hrs event on January 28, 2012, all
turned out to be very prosperous and encouraging. We were very

Saints have said that the Raamcharitmaanas is the juice of all the
Shastras, Puraana, Vedas, Upanishads and all the scriptures. Tulsidas
has in some capacity or another had 'smaran' (recollection or memory)
of the four Dhams, seven Puris, twelve Jyotirlings, the seven great
rivers, the great mountains and such places in his writings within the
Maanas. Tulsidas was a great devotee of the Ram Mantra and evidently,
every Chaupai that has been written is today proclaimed as a Maha
Mantra. Saints have said that the Ram Mantra is embedded within all of
the Chaupais of the Maanas. The letters 'R' and 'M', which comprise of
'Ram' Naam, are present in all Chaupais. In total,Ramcharitha maanas
comprises of twenty seven (27) Shlokas, one hundred and eight (108)
Chhands, eleven (11) major Stutis (some say sixteen) and 1074 Dohas
(of which 40 are Sorthas). He wrote a further 16 scriptures in total
including, the Vinay Patrika and the Hanuman
Chalisa.
