Give yourself permission to say no!
As children, many of us were taught to always
try to please people. We were told it was important
to be seen as nice and non-confrontational. As a
result, we went out of our way to do things that
people wanted. We became people pleasers, afraid
to rock the boat.
Is this still your mantra?
Recognize and appreciate that you have a right to
do what is right for you. There is no need to always
feel obligated to please others, at your expense.
If a friend asks you to do something when you have
other priorities, say NO. If the school asks you to
volunteer when you have other plans. Say No.
Don't feel obligated to offer an excuse. Give yourself
permission to say, NO. Because a balanced life
includes pleasing yourself as well as others.

What you do best

You can achieve whatever you choose to achieve. The process
begins when you truly make the decision and commitment to do
it.
The tools are there, and the resources and energy are
available. Your main job is to provide the what and the why,
the vision and the reason.
Although no significant achievement is easy, whatever you
envision is absolutely possible. You owe it to that vision,
to yourself and to all of life to transform the possibility
into reality.
As each day passes, you must spend your time, your energy
and your efforts on one thing or another. Choose then, to
invest yourself in something that truly matters.
You are equipped and inclined and eager to achieve, so focus
on a goal that has real meaning, and follow it. Remember
that your desire to attain the goal is also a desire to go
through the enriching, fulfilling process of reaching that
goal.
Achievement is what you do best, so take the opportunity to
do it. Fill your days with achievement, and give yourself
the meaning and fulfillment you desire and deserve.

Bearing Fruit
"In order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please
him in every way. Bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the
knowledge of God." Colossians 1:10
That should be the goal of every Christian: to live a life worthy of
the Lord, that we might please him in every way. The result will be
that we will bear fruit in everything we do. We are so blessed to be
called the children of God! As his grateful child, I seek to please
him in all I do. I wish to see him smiling at me. I long to hear the
words, "Well done! You have made me proud." When I am able to go about
every duty in life, whether it is cleaning the floor, closing a deal
at work or working in a hot kitchen at church, to his glory and honor,
to give him pleasure, then I have succeeded in living a life worthy of
the Lord. Doing the mundane to his glory brings fruit; abundant fruit.
The more we seek to honor him in all areas of life, the more we become
like our Lord Jesus, who sought to only do his Father's will. This
will bring tremendous growth, but it will also bring us a greater
understanding of who our Father is. We will see that he wants what
is good for us, he wants us to grow, and he wants us to prosper. All
these things come at a cost: self-denial exchanged for seeking him.
But what a prize at the end of the road: a smiling Father with
outstretched arms waiting to take us home!
Father, we are so grateful that you have showered us with your grace!
You have taken us as your children, even though we are so unworthy.
May all we do bring a smile to your face. May we look into your eyes
and see that we have made you proud. May we live a life worthy of you.
Help us to bear fruit for your glory and honor. And may we grow to
know you better with each passing day. Amen

Jerome stepped up in front of the huge audience. Not too long ago,
Jerome wouldn't have been caught dead speaking publicly. All that
changed when he found he had something to talk about. Jesus Christ had
changed his life, and he wanted the whole world to know. Jerome truly
believed that anything was possible for him, now that Jesus Christ was
the center of his life. That same confidence can be ours when we turn
our lives over to Jesus. Christ transforms us and enables us to do
things that we doubted were possible before. Trust the Lord to help

Your Personal Derby Run - #6440

Honest, we really didn't mean to be in northern Kentucky on Kentucky
Derby weekend. But obviously, thousands of people did! In trying to
avoid flooding as we traveled, that's exactly where we managed to be.
So there we were in the middle of rampant Derby Fever. I didn't bet on
anybody, and I refuse to wear one of those floppy hats.
The restaurant where we had dinner made sure the TV was on so everyone
could watch the world's most famous horse race. Boy, I'll tell you, it
is impressive! High-stakes horsemanship, a drama-packed "run for the
roses"--over in two minutes.
I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about
"Your Personal Derby Run."
Now, actually that race is pretty amazing to watch. Those horses like
explode with raw power and they've got this give-it-all intensity;
they're driving with everything they've got to win their race.
So should I. So should you. Like the original thoroughbred Jesus-man,
Paul. He talks about it in our word for today from the Word of God, 2
Timothy 4, and I'm going to begin reading in verse 6, with Paul's
final words of his final letter before he made the final sacrifice for
Jesus. He will soon die for his allegiance to Christ. Here's what he
wrote: "I am already being poured out...I have finished the race" (2
Timothy 4:6-7). Hey, when you pour out what's in a pitcher, it's
empty; there's nothing left. Paul says, "Man, I've got nothing left at
the finish line. That's the way I want it to be." It's just like his
Master.
I've actually been thinking a lot lately about the fact that God calls
our life in Him a race. Not a jog, but a race to a finish line. Are
you running it with that kind of intensity? See, the thing is, we
don't know how much longer we have before we get to the finish line.
That's why we've got to run with everything we've got. We're talking
about thoroughbred intensity here, not just casual, go-to-church,
business-as-usual Christianity. Even if I live to be 108, there are so
few days to make the eternity difference I was put here to make. There
are no days to waste, no opportunities we can afford to miss. There's
no time to say "maybe later" for the "I love you"...the "thank
you"...the "here am I, Lord"...the "let me tell you about my Jesus."
I think it's time to make the prayer of Moses our prayer: "Teach us to
number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom" (Psalm
90:12). I think that's saying, "Make every day count." That's what it
means to live smart in our race to the finish line. Randy Alcorn said,
"Thirty seconds after we die, we will know how we should have lived."
A little late then. How about getting that figured out now instead of
when it's too late?
Because my finish line...well, it's not a carpet of roses. My finish
line is Jesus. And, you know, His "well done" is really the only prize
that matters.

Senses are funny things if you really think about it. You and I spend our
whole lives seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling the world
around us. And the combined information we gather from those senses gives us
our experience of the world. When it comes down to it, every sense we have
is just a way to gather information.
For example, a rose smells the way it does because the chemicals it releases
interact with receptor cells which in turn send the information we call
"smell" to our brain. A rainbow looks the way it does because its light
waves are received through the lens of the eye and are projected onto the
retina, which sends signals through the optic nerve and tells our brain what
we're seeing.
Now, the same is true in a much greater sense when it comes to spiritual
realities. There are spiritual realities beyond smell and beyond sight that
can only be comprehended by faith. And God has given every one of us an
incredible capacity and that capacity is the ability to believe things
unobservable by any of the five physical senses.
The average person, like Thomas in today's passage, lives by the idea that
seeing is believing. But faith takes you to a higher level which says,
"believing is seeing." So when it comes to spiritual realities, remember
that in order to see, you must first truly believe!

Well, I can do as much as that. I can do a kind act toward the Lord's
servant. The Lord knows I love them all and would count it an honor to wash
their feet. For the sake of their Master, I love the disciples.
How gracious of the Lord to mention so insignificant an action—"to give to
drink a cup of cold water only"! This I can do, however poor: this I may do,
however lowly: this I will do right cheerfully. This, which seems so little,
the Lord notices—notices when done to the least of His followers. Evidently
it is not the cost, nor the skill, nor the quantity, that He looks at, but
the motive: that which we do to a disciple, because he is a disciple, his
Lord observes and recompenses. He does not reward us for the merit of what
we do but according to His riches of His grace.
I give a cup of cold water, and He makes me to drink of living water. I give
to one of His little ones, and He treats me as one of them. Jesus finds an
apology for His liberality in that which His grace has led me to do, and He
says, "He shall in no wise lose his reward."

"MY SAVIOR FIRST OF ALL!"
Matthew 24:10-13
"At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate
each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.
Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but
he who stands firm to the end will be saved."
Jesus is coming soon! One of the prophecies concerning His return concerns
the rise of false prophets and even those who claim to be Messiah. Since
1891, when the blind hymn writer, Fanny Crosby wrote this week's hymn, there
have been many false leaders who claimed to be the promised Messiah. Each of
these charlatans lacked the required proof---the prints of the nails in his
hands! Read carefully the words the words of this old hymn:
My Savior First of All
When my lifework is ended,
and I cross the swelling tide,
When the bright and glorious morning I shall see;
I shall know my Redeemer
when I reach the other side,
And His smile will be the first to welcome me.

always encourage one another and build each other up,
Most of all, always think before you speak so

my strength and my Redeemer.

The Riches of God's Grace
Ephesians 1:1-14
Do you think of yourself as rich? No matter how much money you have,
if you're a believer in Jesus, you're extremely wealthy because God
has lavished the riches of His grace upon you. At the moment of
salvation, He deposited into your account "every spiritual blessing in
the heavenly places in Christ" (v. 3). Why, then, do so many believers
live in spiritual poverty?
1. Ignorance. Some Christians don't know about this unlimited
spiritual "bank account," and, therefore, they never draw upon it.
2. Confusion. Too many believers just don't know how to access the
treasures of God's grace. As a result, they worry and complain about
their needs and problems or in desperation come to the Lord begging
and pleading for help, never realizing His abundant supply has already
been deposited into their account.
3. Competing Interests. Distraction by things of this world may be the
most common reason. Christians in this category focus on possessions,
pressing responsibilities, and advancement but lack interest in God's
spiritual blessings.
The riches of God's grace supersede any earthly wealth. They give the
peace and contentment that money can never buy, and their benefits
reach all the way into eternity.
The only way to access God's spiritual riches is by faith. We don't
have to beg or persuade the Lord to give what He has already made
available to us. Instead, we simply choose to believe that we are who
He says we are and can do what He has called us to accomplish.

The Living Water
"The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-
scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-
watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail." (ISAIAH
58:11)
Scripture Focus: Isaiah 55:1-11
Do you ever feel as though you are wandering through a barren desert?
Does your thirsty soul long for something more in a "dry and weary
land where there is no water" (Psalm 63:1)? Have you been looking to
the waters of this world to satisfy, only to be left wanting? Jesus
said that those who drink the waters of this world will thirst again,
but those who drink the water He gives will be completely satisfied
(John 4:13-14). He is the Spring whose waters never fail, and He
beckons you this day to come and drink freely the water of life
(Revelation 22:17).
Trees need water in order to survive and bear fruit. We, too, must
soak in the Living Water if our lives are going to flourish and bear
God-honoring fruit. As the earth opens wide to receive God's gift of
rain, so must our hearts break open wide to drink of His fertile, life-
giving Word (see Deuteronomy 32:2). Through it, He causes rains of
grace to fall upon a sun-scorched soul, yielding new life with the
green of spring.
Insight: Those Who Drink The Living Water Of God's Word Become "Oaks
Of Righteousness, The Planting Of The Lord, That He May Be
Glorified" (Isaiah 61:3B).

When God Hurts Your Feelings

"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have
plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every
situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in
want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength."
Philippians 4:12-13 (NIV 1984)
Has God ever hurt your feelings? I'll be honest, sometimes I'll read
those verses from Philippians listed above and think to myself, "This
is a tough pill to swallow."
Content in any and every situation?
Really?
Several years ago my daughter was a state champion gymnast. To see her
do gymnastics was like looking at God smile. She was beautiful,
graceful, and captivating to watch.
One night while practicing for one of the largest tournaments she'd
ever compete in, she fell. It was a move she'd done hundreds of times
with the greatest of ease. But this time something went terribly wrong
and that one mistake ended her gymnastic dreams.
We spent a year going from doctor to doctor only to be told she'd
never be able to support the weight of her body on her injured
shoulder again.
I'll be honest, this was heart wrenching. Watching a 14 year old girl
wrestle with the fact her dreams were stripped from her doesn't
exactly lend itself to feelings of contentment. Now, I know in the
grand scheme of life, people face much worse situations. But in her
world, this was huge.
It was so tempting to wallow in the "why" questions and tell God He'd
hurt our feelings.
Why did this happen?
Why didn't You stop this God?
Why weren't my prayers answered?
Have you ever been there? Have you ever had a big situation in your
life where you just couldn't process why God would allow this to
happen? Or maybe even a small annoyance like losing your keys or
having a flat tire on a morning you really needed to be somewhere.
It's so tempting to wallow in the why.
Asking why is perfectly normal. Asking why isn't unspiritual. However,
if asking why pushes us farther from God rather than drawing us closer
to Him, it is the wrong question.
If asking why doesn't offer hope, what will?
The what question.
In other words: "Now that this is my reality, what am I supposed to do
with it?"
Philippians 4:8, "Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is
noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think
about such things." (NIV)
I like to call this verse "directions on where to park my mind."
And that's exactly what Ashley has had to do with her dashed
gymnastics dreams. Instead of wallowing in why did this happen, I've
had to help her say:
This is my reality, now what am I going to do with it?
What can I learn from this?
What part of this is for my protection?
What other opportunities could God be providing?
What maturity could God be building into me?
Switching from the why to the what question paves the road to parking
our mind in a much better place.
Is it always easy? Nope.
But is it a way to find a perspective beyond situations where we feel
God has allowed something in our lives we don't understand and we
absolutely don't like? Yes.

Dear Lord, I want to process everything I face in life through the

Dr. Howard Hendricks, a professor at Dallas Seminary, was once
entertaining a rather esteemed colleague from another seminary and he
took him home for dinner. As they sat down around the table, Dr.
Hendricks asked his little four-year-old boy to give thanks.
And with this esteemed religious leader at the end of the table, the
little boy prayed, "Dear Jesus, please be with the fence in the
backyard. Amen."
Well, the visitor was rather startled by that simple prayer. So Dr.
Hendricks thought he'd better explain. He said to the man, "You see,
sir, on the other side of the fence is the biggest, baddest, meanest
dog you've ever seen. And every day my little boy prays, 'Jesus, be
with that fence!'"
Now, is God interested in backyards? Sure! Is God interested in
fences? Of course! Is God interested that little boy's fear?
Absolutely!
So whatever is making you anxious, whether it's finances, family
issues, health problems, or the dog on the other side of the fence,
turn it over to God and allow Him to calm your spirit!
NO ANXIETY IS TOO SMALL FOR GOD TO HANDLE. SO PRAY AND TURN YOUR FEARS
OVER TO HIM, KNOWING THAT HE LOVES YOU, AND ALLOW HIM TO CALM YOUR
SPIRIT!

judged?

righteousness and my integrity. Psalm 7:8*
I was in such a hurry, but the woman in front of me was clearly not. I knew
I had taken a chance by driving the two-lane highway to the doctor's
appointment, but usually at that time of day the road was a quick way to
avoid the snarls of interstate traffic. Not so today.
I weaved back and forth a bit in my lane trying to find an opportunity to
pass the offending car, but the road was too curvy to make an attempt.
Finally, a straight section emerged, and I sped around the motorist,
sneaking a quick glance to see who was being so rude.
The woman behind the wheel was crying—horrible, messy sobs. My mouth dropped
open in shame. She was much too upset to be driving at all. And I had only
been concerned with her as an obstacle in my path.
I pulled over as soon as I could and bowed my head, begging God to forgive
me for being so merciless and judgmental toward someone else. I asked God to
minister to the woman who was so sorrowful. I drove on to my
appointment—late, but at peace.
Father, help me remember how merciful You've been to me. May I treat others
with the same tenderness.

When our first child was born, I was like a "born-againer," filled with
gratitude and walking with a new lilt in my step. I loved that little girl
and the days were filled with newfound bliss in life. Then we found out we
were to have another child. I was in trouble. How could another child ever
be loved as much as I loved the first? It seemed I though love was a pie.
There was only so much of it. You could only cut it into so many pieces and
then it would be gone. But when our son was born, I discovered I was wrong.
Love is not like a pie, but rather like an ever-flowing stream, an artesian
well, no end in sight! I discovered I loved and love our son as much as our
daughter. God's love and grace are so much more extravagant than my own.
God's love never runs out. That is why in Jesus' parable, all the workers
get the same reward! So much for "report card" theology. Good thing it is
God who sets the final table in the Kingdom!
*O Holy and Abundant God, you created a world in which there is not only
enough for all, but an abundance for all. May we also learn to love this
fact and live it. Amen. *

to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.'

not agree with me for the usual daily wage?
14 "'Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same
as I give to you.
15 "'Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are
you envious because I am generous?'

*Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly
entertained angels. -Hebrews 13:2 (NKJV)*
*Certain things are supposed to go hand in hand with being a believer.
Hospitality is one of them. Christians are to recognize everything they
have, from the shirt on their back to the roof over their head, ultimately
belongs to God. They aren't owners of any of it, just temporary stewards.
And as stewards, they are to use these resources as the Lord desires...and
hospitality is a big part of that.*

Our homes are to be an extension of God's grace to those who are in need of
hospitality, and the writer of Hebrews tacks an interesting point onto this
principle. He exhorts us to be hospitable towards strangers, but then adds
the warning, "For by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels."
This is one of those passages in the Bible where we ask ourselves, "Did I
read that correctly? Did God just go on record as stating that some of us
have unknowingly played host or hostess to angels?" It's right there in
black and white. Scripture says there are occasions when our hospitality is
received not by humans but by angelic beings.
We see an example of this in Genesis Chapter 18 as Abraham and Sarah host
three angels on their journey. That's more than just an interesting story;
it's also a warning to us that when the occasion calls for us to help a
stranger, it could be more than a mere man or woman!
Of course, our hospitality shouldn't be motivated by fear. It should be
based on a sincere and genuine desire to direct the grace and gifts we
receive from God toward others. However, this warning certainly shines a new
light on the importance of our hospitality; we never know when we might be
hosting God's heavenly host!

Jeremiah 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour,

know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the
LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin
no more.
Reflection
One beauty of the Covenant of Grace is this: we are promised intimate
and familial knowledge of our Lord. No longer is He a God far-removed,
approachable by a chosen few. No, in the New Covenant we are all kings
and priests and are granted, in Christ, the most intimate access to
the Father's throne—indeed, even access to the Father's ear by our
prayers!

What Do You Think
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is
noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think
about such things.
Christians would be do well to take note of this verse. If we only
think these kinds of thoughts, we would quit backbiting and hurting
each other. And we would quit tempting ourselves with our thoughts.
What if all our conversations, along with the music we listened to and
the TV shows we watch, were in submission to this rule. So ... let's
do it.

A Church Cemented in the Routine
What is the worst enemy the church faces today? This is where a lot of
unreality and unconscious hyprocrisy enters. Many are ready to say,
"The liberals are our worst enemy." But the simple fact is that the
average evangelical church does not have too much trouble with
liberalism. Nobody gets up in our churches and claims that the first
five books of Moses are just myths. Nobody says that the story of
creation is simply religious mythology. Nobody denies that Christ
walked on the water or that He rose from the grave. Nobody gets up in
our churches and claims that Jesus Christ is not the Son of God or
that He isn't coming back again. Nobody denies the validity of the
Scriptures. We just cannot hide behind liberalism and say that it is
our worst enemy. We believe that evangelical Christians are trying to
hold on to the truth given to us, the faith of our fathers, so the
liberals are not our worst enemy. Neither do we have a problem with
the government. People in our country can do just about whatever they
please and the government pays no attention. We can hold prayer
meetings all night if we want, and the government would never bother
us or question us. There is no secret police breathing down our backs
watching our every move. We live in a free land, and we ought to thank
God every day for that privilege. The treacherous enemy facing the
church of Jesus Christ today is the dictatorship of the routine, when
the routine becomes "lord" in the life of the church. Programs are
organized and the prevailing conditions are accepted as normal. Anyone
can predict next Sunday's service and what will happen. This seems to
be the most deadly threat in the church today. When we come to the
place where everything can be predicted and nobody expects anything
unusual from God, we are in a rut. The routine dictates, and we can
tell not only what will happen next Sunday, but what will occur next
month and, if things do not improve, what will take place next year.
Then we have reached the place where what has been determines what is,
and what is determines what will be.

Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs
were done by the apostles. Acts 2:43
Thought
The routine may be traditional or contemporary or a combination of the
two. What shatters the routine is the awesome presence of the Lord. Do
we miss Him?
Prayer
Lord, shock us with a Holy Spirit invasion into our routine. Crack the
cement and set us free to experience You in ways unexpected. In Jesus
name.
