Matthew 16:24
If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him . . . follow Me
Seeking to overcome self by self-effort is a hopeless struggle. Self will
never cast out self, because an independent self motivated by the flesh
still wants to be God. We must follow Christ by being led by the Holy Spirit
down the path of death to self-rule. As Paul wrote: "We who live are
constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of
Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh" (2 Corinthians 4:11).
This may sound like a dismal path to walk, but I assure you that it is not.
It is a tremendous experience to be known by the Shepherd and to follow Him
as obedient, dependent sheep (John 10:27). The fact that we are led by the
Spirit of God, even when it results in the death to self-rule, is our
assurance of sonship (Romans 8;14). We were not designed to function
independently of God. Only when we are dependent on Him and intent on
following Christ are we complete and free to prove that the will of God is
good, acceptable and perfect (Romans 12:2).
Self-rule is motivated by self-interest and supported only by self-centered
resources. When we come to the end of our resources, we discover God's
resources. God will let us do our thing and patiently wait until
self-interest and self-rule leave us spiritually and emotionally bankrupt.
We can turn to God any time we weary of trying to run our own lives
independently of Him. He doesn't force Himself on us; He just simply says,
"If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him... follow Me." Are you willing
to forsake self-rule and follow Him?
Prayer: Loving Shepherd, I desire Your will for my life, and I purpose today
to follow You in obedience and dependence.

Read Daniel 1 -- 3
Highlights:
Daniel's faith. Daniel is a prime example of teaching godly principles to
every level of life. Beginning as a teenage captive (Dan. 1:1-6), he
determines not to defile himself (1:8-16). Declares wisdom is from God
(2:19-28).
During the reign of wicked Jehoiakim, Nebuchadnezzar finally conquered all
of Palestine (II Kin. 24:1-7). Daniel and other selected Israelite captives
were assigned new names which would identify them as citizens of Babylon.
The king's intent was that these select men be taught to think and live like
Babylonians. He gave unto Daniel (meaning "God is Judge") the name of
Belteshazzar (meaning "Prince of Baal") (Dan. 1:7). As Daniel heard his new
name called each day, it was intended to remind him that the comfort,
esteem, and high position he enjoyed in his new society were all the result
of his being the "Prince of Baal."
The selected Israelite captives were also given a three-year course of
training to educate them in the language and customs of their new country
(1:3-5). It seems that Nebuchadnezzar's purpose for this specialized
training was to use these young leaders to influence the other captives to
become loyal to their new country and their new god. One of the provisions
of these "privileged" men was to eat the same kind of food the king ate.
Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself (Dan. 1:8-16).
There was no question in Daniel's mind as to who was King over his life.
Daniel could refuse to eat the king's meat since there was something more
important to him than feasting on all the delicacies that the king could put
before him. Daniel was not concerned about losing recognition by refusing to
eat the king's food. He based his steadfast purpose on the Word of God. To
partake of the king's food would not be acceptable, for it was prepared in
violation of the Levitical laws of God. Regardless of how tasty, it would
not be acceptable, for his life was controlled by One far greater than King
Nebuchadnezzar.
Throughout Daniel's 69 years in heathen courts, he remained true to God, who
is also able in all temptations to keep you (us) from falling, and to
present you (us) faultless (Jude 1:24).
The key to Daniel's victory is available to all who will submit to the King
of kings. He welcomes the believer to receive His life more abundant. But to
appropriate abundant life, one must die to self-interest (John 12:24). The
Apostle Paul said: I die daily (I Cor. 15:31).
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but
will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to
bear it (I Cor. 10:13).
Thought for Today:
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall
receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love
Him (James 1:12).
Christ Revealed:
As The Stone that smote the image (Dan. 2:35). The Stone is Jesus Christ
(Acts 4:11; Eph. 2:20; I Pet. 2:4-8).

Acts 25
Felix vacates his office without resolving Paul's status.
INSIGHT
How strangely God fulfills His own word: "So you must also bear witness at
Rome" (Acts 23:11). Paul knows he will have to go to Rome, but he doesn't
expect to go under Roman guard and at Rome's expense. After two years the
Jews still thirst for his blood! Had he been transferred to Jerusalem, his
life would have been imperiled. However, God had called him to preach the
Gospel in Rome. Through these circumstances, Paul is transferred.
PRAYER
Let's praise God for His wonderful ways:
Blessed be the Lord,
Because He has heard the voice of my supplications!
The Lord is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore my heart greatly rejoices,
And with my song I will praise Him. (Psalm 28:6-7)
Pray this confession to the Lord as you seek to keep your life free from sin
and in fellowship with Him:
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses;
But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.
They have bowed down and fallen;
But we have risen and stand upright.
Save, Lord!
May the King answer us when we call.
(Psalm 20:7-9)
Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind, and pray this
affirmation to the Lord:

The Mercy Gift
"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and
opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me" (Rev 3:20).
I am constantly amazed that the Creator of the universe wants to have an
intimate relationship with us. While we are frantically searching for that
certain something to make us happy, God is standing there the entire time
saying "Here I am!" The scripture in Revelation says that He is standing at
our door and knocking. If only we would take the time to listen and invite
Him in! My neighbor Gerry told me a story that gave us the perfect picture
of this concept.
Gerry is single, an attorney by vocation and works from his home. He has an
amazing gift of mercy, an incredible love for animals and a malfunctioning
front door. His door doesn't shut properly and the only way to keep the door
closed is to lock it, which Gerry rarely does. One day while working at home
he heard his front door open. When he investigated the noise he discovered
that Buddy, one of the neighborhood dogs, had let himself in by simply
pushing on the front door.
Gerry gave him a treat and day after day, Buddy would come and visit. Each
day it was the same routine. Buddy would push the door open, stand in the
foyer and patiently wait for Gerry to come to him and give him a treat. He
never forced his way in or begged for food - he always waited for Gerry to
come to him. And Gerry always came. A few weeks later, Buddy started
bringing his friends - other dogs in the neighborhood - and soon the dogs
started hanging out for days before they would go back home.
I laugh as I often drive by Gerry's house and see his front door wide open.
And yet, I know that inside he is enjoying the fellowship of the
neighborhood dogs. We can have that same fellowship with Jesus when we open
the doors of our hearts to Him. He is standing at the door waiting for you
to invite Him in.

Priceless Pigs

Today's Truth
"I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that
you may know the hope to which he has called you…" (Ephesians 1:18 NIV)
Friend to Friend
An African tribe viewed a film about the life of Jesus, The Jesus Film, in
their own heart language. As a follow-up, another ministry, Faith Comes by
Hearing, provided the tribe with a contraption called a "recorder." Most of
the world can neither read nor write, so the recorder allows the tribal
people to be discipled by listening to the New Testament in their own native
tongue. It runs off of solar power and will play the New Testament 1,000

A group of listeners gather round to listen to the story of Jesus healing a
demon-possessed man recorded in Luke chapter 8.
They (Jesus and his disciples) sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,which
is across the lake from Galilee. When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a
demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn
clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. When he saw Jesus,
he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, "What
do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't
torture me!" For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man.
Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and
kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon
into solitary places…
Jesus demanded the demons to come out of the man and cast into a herd of
nearby pigs. Then the pigs rushed down a steep hillside and into a lake and
drowned.
The tribal community was stunned as they listened to this story. They knew
the value of one pig, much less an entire herd.
"Why would Jesus do that?" they asked. "Why would He allow their entire
source of income to be destroyed?"
Many questions stirred among the group. Then the wise chief spoke. "Perhaps
Jesus is showing us that one human soul is worth more than an entire tribe's
economy," he said.
I was silenced by his answer. That passage had been quite mysterious to me
for many years. But God revealed this powerful truth to one little African
chief hearing the story for the very first time. The chief understood just
how valuable we are to God.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your truth to the babes in Christ
when so many of the studied miss it. Open my eyes to see and your truth,
rather than become satisfied with predigested truth from the many teachers
around me. Help me to be as this tiny tribe, and listen in awe as if I were
hearing the gospel for the very first time. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Jesus is the song of our heart and the joy of our lives when we know Him.
We have a true and faithful friend, when we know the Lord Jesus Christ
as our Lord and Savior.
Our heavenly Father has given us everything which we need to be
blessed and prosper. Yet, many people do not recognize the blessings
of the Lord or take advantage of what the Lord has provided for them..
**The story is told of parents who also provided for their son's needs,
yet he failed to do what they had asked of him, and missed the blessing.
When their son left for his freshman year at Duke University, his parents
gave him a Bible, assuring him it would be a great help. Later, as he
began sending them letters asking for money, they would write back
telling him to read his Bible, citing chapter and verse. He would reply
that he was reading the Bible--but he still needed money. When he
came home for a semester break, his parents told him they knew
he had not been reading his Bible. How? They had tucked $10 and
$20 bills by the verses they had cited in their letters.
Our Lord has given us great and precious promises in His Holy Word
which we can claim and appropriate by obeying God's Word and will.
He promises to supply all of our needs, according to His riches in glory,
when we seek Him and the kingdom of God first. We are promised perfect
peace, if our mind is fixed upon the Lord. God will never leave or forsake
us,
but will be with us always, even until the end of the world. For every
need, there
are promises we can find and claim in God's Word, which will never fail.
Jesus
is the song in our heart, even in the darkest night. He is the one who
gives us
light. In Him, we are made whole.
May our hearts behold the Lord speaking to us through His Word as we
rely on Him and trust completely in His unfailing love. When we look to
the Lord with confidence in His provisions, we find His Word will be
confirmed in our lives. He is Jehovah Jireh, "our Provider" and everything
we need can be found in the Lord.
Lay your burdens at the foot of the cross, and you'll find Jesus will see
you through. If He carried the weight of the world's sins upon
His shoulders, I know He can carry you. Let the Lord be the song
of your heart and you'll find the melody of life grows sweeter with each
passing day. When Jesus whispers His hope into your heart,
life will never be the same.

But if a widow [or widower] has children or grandchildren, these should
learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their
own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is
pleasing to God. --1 Timothy 5:4
For some senior adults, moving toward dependency happens quickly as the
result of an illness, a fall, an accident with long-term effects, and more.
But, most seniors creep toward dependency at first unnoticed, then realized,
and finally understanding and willingly.
Changes that continue to happen because of aging cause a senior citizen to
finally understand: "I can't do this by myself anymore. I need someone to
help me out." Depending on the individual, some may be eager and willing to
accept the help of another, while others find it hard to admit what is
happening.
The caregiver should be one who agrees to become responsible for one who
decides to take on dependency. In the fifth commandment found in Exodus
20:12, "Honor your father and mother so that you may live long in the land
the LORD your God is giving you," the rationale in God's plan is that family
members are to look after one another.
Parents are to care for their children; and then in reciprocation, the adult
children are to care for their parents. The most God-honoring care giving
will come from the wisdom found in the fifth commandment. If you are at the
point where you would like to begin making plans for someone to take care of
you one day, then consider sitting down with a family member to discuss the
next steps.
Be aware of the situation and how much time will need to be spent between
the two of you. Work out a plan, involving more than one family member, if
possible, and recognize that there will be some difficult times. Decide
whether or not you want to remain in your own home, or if you need to go
where it will be more convenient for your family.
PRAYER CHALLENGE: Ask for God's will, wisdom, and guidance to be revealed in
this situation. Pray that God would work out the details in His own way and
in His time.

THOUGHT:
In an age where respect is little known and even less practiced,
showing honor for those who are older is often overlooked. Yet in
this place, by the LORD's own word, showing respect for the elderly
ranks right up there with reverencing God. But then we shouldn't be
surprised, since God made honoring parents the very first
commandment (in the Ten Commandments -- Exodus 20) directed at our
relationship with others -- the first four commandments were
directed at our relationship with him!
PRAYER:
Holy and Eternal God, thank you for my parents in the flesh and
in the faith. Please give those who have been my spiritual mentors
a special blessing. Without their guidance, I'm not sure where I
would have ended up. Help me as I grow older to not only mature,
but to also gain the character that will be needed by those whom
you have placed before me to influence. May we, young and old
alike, restore dignity and respect to our relationships before you
in our generation. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Express Your Emotions Freely
Day 99
The grieving customs in ancient Israel involved a great deal of free
expression, especially compared to today's culture.
After King Saul, his son, and Israel's army were defeated, "David and
all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them. They
mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son
Jonathan, and for the army of the LORD and the house of Israel,
because they had fallen by the sword" (2 Samuel 1:11-12).
First of all, David and all the men mourned their loss together as a
group. "Group grieving" is an effective tool for the journey, but in
today's culture it is something that you must seek out, usually in the
form of a support group.
The second action of David and his men was to take hold of their
clothes and tear them. They released their energy in a way that was
physical, yet not harmful.
Lastly, and still as a group, they "mourned and wept and fasted till
evening." In their culture they were free to openly express and share
their grieving emotions, and they were expected to do so.
Think of the forms of mourning that you have engaged in. How does it
compare to the mourning of David and his men? You can learn from the
past and be a part of an improved future.
Glorious Lord, I want to express my emotions freely, actively, and
without embarrassment. Amen.

When God Hurts Your Feelings

situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in
want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength."
Philippians 4:12-13 (NIV 1984)
Has God ever hurt your feelings? I'll be honest, sometimes I'll read
those verses from Philippians listed above and think to myself, "This
is a tough pill to swallow."
Content in any and every situation?
Really?
Several years ago my daughter was a state champion gymnast. To see her
do gymnastics was like looking at God smile. She was beautiful,
graceful, and captivating to watch.
One night while practicing for one of the largest tournaments she'd
ever compete in, she fell. It was a move she'd done hundreds of times
with the greatest of ease. But this time something went terribly wrong
and that one mistake ended her gymnastic dreams.
We spent a year going from doctor to doctor only to be told she'd
never be able to support the weight of her body on her injured
shoulder again.
I'll be honest, this was heart wrenching. Watching a 14 year old girl
wrestle with the fact her dreams were stripped from her doesn't
exactly lend itself to feelings of contentment. Now, I know in the
grand scheme of life, people face much worse situations. But in her
world, this was huge.
It was so tempting to wallow in the "why" questions and tell God He'd
hurt our feelings.
Why did this happen?
Why didn't You stop this God?
Why weren't my prayers answered?
Have you ever been there? Have you ever had a big situation in your
life where you just couldn't process why God would allow this to
happen? Or maybe even a small annoyance like losing your keys or
having a flat tire on a morning you really needed to be somewhere.
It's so tempting to wallow in the why.
Asking why is perfectly normal. Asking why isn't unspiritual. However,
if asking why pushes us farther from God rather than drawing us closer
to Him, it is the wrong question.
If asking why doesn't offer hope, what will?
The what question.
In other words: "Now that this is my reality, what am I supposed to do with it?"
Philippians 4:8, "Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is
noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think
about such things." (NIV)
I like to call this verse "directions on where to park my mind."
And that's exactly what Ashley has had to do with her dashed
gymnastics dreams. Instead of wallowing in why did this happen, I've
had to help her say:
This is my reality, now what am I going to do with it?
What can I learn from this?
What part of this is for my protection?
What other opportunities could God be providing?
What maturity could God be building into me?
Switching from the why to the what question paves the road to parking
our mind in a much better place.
Is it always easy? Nope.
But is it a way to find a perspective beyond situations where we feel
God has allowed something in our lives we don't understand and we
absolutely don't like? Yes.

Dear Lord, I want to process everything I face in life through the
filter of Your love. I know You love me. But sometimes it's just hard
to understand the circumstances that come my way. I find myself
consumed with trying to figure things out rather than looking for Your
perspective and trusting You. Thank You for this new way to look at
things. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Application Steps:
Mentally walk yourself through parking your mind in a better place by
remembering an event that happened this week and looking for God's
protection, provision and process of maturing you.
Reflections:
Am I afraid to have honest conversations with God about how I really
feel about some of my circumstances?
How might it be helpful to really talk to God about things that hurt me?
Why is it helpful to ask what now, instead of wallowing in the why questions?

your ways my ways,' declares the LORD. 'As the heavens are higher than
the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher

Kindness is just the word for [certain] small acts. Kindness is love
flowing out in little gentlenesses. We ought to carry our lives so
that they will be perpetual benedictions wherever we go. All we need
for such a ministry is a heart full of love for Christ; for if we
truly love Christ we shall also love our fellow men, and love will

In our fast paced world, with lives stuck on fast forward, rage comes
quicker than ever. Someone gets cut off in traffic and rage kicks in
laying on the horn, screaming out the window, if not doing something
even more drastic. Road rage is one example; airline rage is another.
I once witnessed frustrated and fearful gate agents called for the
police when a passenger at the airport, frustrated by a delay, began
to yell.
"Better a patient man than a warrior, . . ."
A friend caught in one of those nightmare travel scenarios, flights
delayed and canceled due to weather, described what happened when he
was patient with the ticket agent. After she worked out the remainder
of his trip she thanked him for his demeanor. "You made my day," she
said.
". . . a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city."
The person of rage may get his way at the counter or feel better
having vented his anger at other drivers. He may feel good about being
a road warrior, but he is not. God's Word says that the patient
person, the one who can control his temper, is better.
The impatient person may think he is in control by forcing his will on
others, but he is not. He is out of control, unable to control
himself. We are to be under the control of the Spirit and be people of
patience.
Rage may be the rage today, but patience is honored by God forever.
Perhaps something will test your patience today. Do you think you will
pass or fail? You probably already know the answer! Ask God right now
to help you begin to be a patient person.
