SEPTEMBER 15, 2011
MEMORIAL, OUR LADY OF SORROWS
THURSDAY 24TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

Heb 5:7-9 / Ps 31:2-3, 3-4, 5-6, 15-16, 20 / Jn 19:25-27, or Lk
2:33-35

HEBREWS 5:7-9
Christ, in the days of his mortal life, offered his sacrifice with
tears and cries. He prayed to him who could save him from death, and
he was heard because of his humble submission. Although he was Son, he
learned through suffering what obedience was, and once made perfect,
he became the source of eternal salvation for those who obey him.

LUKE 2:33-3
Jesus' father and mother wondered at what was said about the child.
Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, "Know this: your
son is a sign, a sign established for the falling and rising of many
in Israel, a sign of contradiction; and a sword will pierce your own
soul, so that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed."

REFLECTION
Motherhood comes with its glows and blows. As many mothers would
attest, the joy of seeing one's own child come alive is simply
priceless. The miracle of life unfolding before one's eyes truly is a
blessing. On the other hand, being a mother entails much sacrifice,
too. It is a responsibility unlike any other, especially to see
through one's child grow and develop and to see him experience and
live life. The joys are probably easy to watch, but being a mother
implies seeing through her child's hardships and struggles as well. It
is in this light that Mary is a model mother. She was there through it
all – she even saw through her son's passion and death. And these
things, she only "kept in her heart." Her tears said what she could
not – that her son's struggles were her very own as well.

This is what we celebrate today – the memorial of our Mother of
Sorrows. What our mothers endured for us – their every tear, sweat,
frustration, and sacrifice is a testament of their deep love for us,
quiet as it may be. It is their silent "yes" to understand their
children more, protect them more and care for them more. Let us give
honor to them in the way only we can do – make the lives they have
helped create a meaningful one. Let us be children of value, worthy of
their sorrows.

May Mary our mother help us bear our pains and sorrows.

PRAYER REQUESTS
We pray …
… for a deep and profound respect for life, especially for the
unborn.
… for the personal intentions of Pauline
… for the eternal repose of the soul of Anna McAvoy. Eternal rest
grant unto her and may perpetual light shine upon her. May she and all
the dearly departed rest in peace.
… for all the prayer intentions in the MTQ Dailyprayer Diary.
… for families who are in need of healing
… for world peace and reconciliation.

Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers
and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!
