Radhe Krishna
All,
By practicing 'Nama yoga' one attains to that highest state.
In the days of ancestors Rivers like the Cauvery, Palar, Vaigai ran
full(South of India).
In
their days, population was much less but food production high. The
earth was fertile. But today, population has increased geometrically,
the water bed has gone low and the soil has lost its productive
capacity. We live in this condition. The days of rivers running full and
supplying pure water has become a dream.
Today, we have been
pushed to the situation of buying water stored in bottles. The days of
rice sacks filling the store rooms in villages have gone and today we go
the
market and buy one or two kilograms of rice sold in polythene bags. The
days of using pure, fresh milk is no more found and we buy milk sold in
small sachets.
People moved from their villages to nearby towns
in search of living; they then moved to the capital cities and then to
northern parts of the country and today we are compelled to seek
employment on foreign lands. It has become a fast life. Increase in
population, reduction in natural resources and the increased comforts
and needs we have learnt to enjoy in our life have considerably
increased the troubles faced in our day-to-day life.
Therefore,
the way of worship of God shown should be adaptable to this changed way
of life. Further, it should help one earn great benefits ('phala').
Is
there such a path? What path can be shown to today's man living in such
changed circumstances and help him reap great benefit?
Can the way of the Seers of yonder days who retired to
the forest and performed tapas be shown? Will one be able to find a
forest even if he desires to retire?
The
question of retiring to the forest does not arise at all because
forests are turning into cities! It is no use to advise a man to take up
the difficult ways of 'hawan' (religious fire rituals), dhyana
(meditation), yoga, etc. So, the Maharishis, even in their time,
foreseeing the way of our life in this Age, have shown a very easy path
to tread. That is verily the path of singing the Divine Names of the
Lord -- the path of Namasankirtan.
What can one attain by singing, chanting the Divine Names of the Lord?
The
state that one attains through performance of homa, dhyana, yoga or
any other arduous spiritual austerity is verily attained by doing this
yoga – 'Nama yoga' (singing the Divine Names of the Lord). By practicing
'Nama yoga' one attains to that highest
state.
---- Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji
-------------------------------
I
am in my twenties and I have a lot of faith on God, but I am not able
to stop my bad habits. Even though I am trying hard to stop them, they
overcome me. Please tell me a remedy.
Sri Sri
Muralidhara
Swamiji:
Faith on God is important. That is good. When
you pray to God, do you tell God about your weaknesses and bad habits
and your sincere desire to come out of them? We perform prayers to God
for mundane worldly things but forget to pray for such wonderful things.
So in your prayer, make it a point to add this, and don't leave Him
until He makes you alright.
-----------------------------------
What is Prarabdha Karma( Accumulated results due to our past actions)?
How does it interfere in one's life?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
Everything in one's life happens because of Prarabdha Karma and
nothing else. So it is not a question of
interference
in one's life, it is that which drives one's life.
------------------------------------
Why is that nobody ask for sufferings?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
That is because it is sufferings!
---------------------------------
It
is said that the past karmas get burnt by chanting the Lord's Name.
Whatever happens in this birth is because of past karmas and is called
'prarabdha'. Does prarabdha change by regular chanting or merely
prepares the ground for the prarabdha of next birth?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
Everything
in this world happens according to Prarabhda only. If one does not
chant the divine Name of the Lord, the Lord will not interfere with his
life. If he does chant the Name of God continuously, the Lord makes his
life
favorable to
him.
For instance, if a person possesses qualities like wealth,
power, beauty etc. by virtue of his prarabdha, then, by chanting the
Nama, the Lord ensures that he does not get a 'head-weight'. If a person
is already poor and leads a life in penury owning to his prarabdha, by
chanting the Nama, the Lord keeps him away from bad thoughts and deeds
like stealing, gambling, alcohol, suicide and so on.
If one's
Bhakti is intense, the grace of the Lord has the power to change one's
Prarabdha too. That, however, calls for strong devotion.
-------------------------------
People
often pray to God vowing to perform something in return when their
prayers are fulfilled – like visiting a certain temple/deity, offering
money to a temple, circumambulation etc. Sometimes they are not able to
fulfill their vows due to illness, accident or other difficulties. Can
something else be offered as an alternate, in such
cases?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
When
vows are taken, they have to be fulfilled exactly as they were taken.
If a person has taken a vow and is incapacitated that he cannot fulfill
it by himself, some one else should take permission from him and fulfill
it on his behalf. If he dies before his vows are fulfilled, he will
take another birth to fulfill the vows, even if someone else fulfills
the vows on his behalf after his demise.
---------------------------------
Although
I have been initiated into the Mahamantra, is it okay if I also chant
other Divine Names sometimes like Rama Nama or Arunachala Siva? Or
should I chant only the Mahamantra?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
The
Mantra initiated by the Guru contains a special power.
That is the
reason why it is recommended that one chant it incessantly. That being
said, there is absolutely nothing wrong in chanting any Divine Name of
God.
----------------------------------
Is
it appropriate for a devotee to seek guidance from a Guru about
materialistic things? Should a devotee confine my relationship with a
Guru to only spiritual aspects? Sometimes I feel guilty for seeking
guidance from my Guru in materialistic aspects.
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
Guru
and God are no different. From whom else can you seek guidance if not
Him? So don't feel guilty for it. There is nothing wrong as long as your
Guru doesn't feel otherwise.
-----------------------------------
Often, I get visions of some death and funerals in my dreams. Why is
it so? What should I do?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
You don't need to do anything. These visions only mean that your
Karmas are vanishing.
---------------------------------
What is the experience connected with chanting Mantras? When does one
get mantra siddhi (Power)?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
Each
Mantra has its own Siddhi. One is said to attain Mantra Siddhi when he
is able to see the deity pertaining to his Mantra, by incessant chanting
of the Mantra.
------------------------------
I
read that Sri Paramacharya (Kanchi Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati
Swamiji) preached that ladies should not chant the Gayatri Mantra. Some
female devotees are chanting the Mantras and performing yagnas. Is this
correct?
Sri Sri Muralidhara
Swamiji:
When
Sri Paramacharya Himself has opined about this, what do we have to
say? Can there be a greater authority?
-------------------------------
Does a child miscarried at three and a half months go to the after
life in the world of spirit?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
Yes, it goes to the appropriate abode.
---------------------------------
I
am in my fifties. Since the last 30 years, I had worked for my family
after the death of my father. Now I am wishing to lead my life for me
alone, in my own way. Is it right for me to think like this?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
Generally,
in this world, people have a delusion that they are the ones who are
helping running others' lives. Actually a set of predetermined factors
are responsible for the
work we do in
this earth.
You have got the right attitude now that you are
just an instrument in the hands of God to do these activities.
Strengthen this attitude. This is Jnana (wisdom).
-------------------------------
What is the effect of writing 'Ram Naam'?Is desire fulfilled if I
write 'Ram Naam' ?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
Absolutely! Why harbour any doubt regarding that?
-------------------------------
Nowadays people are suffering from the grave disease called diabetes.
Kindly show us a way to cure this illness.
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
Take flax seed oil as per medical prescription. That will help
countering diabetes. It can be taken as a preventive
medicine.

How al-Qaeda is a British-Saudi Project
Ramtanu Maitra
18 August 2011
In late July, the US State Department issued a word wide alert warning
of potential terrorist attacks against US citizens and interests
overseas due to an enhanced potential for anti-American violence
following the killing of Osama bin Laden in May. Current information
suggests that al-Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan
terrorist attacks against US interests in multiple regions, including
Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
It is widely acknowledged that Saudi Arabia remains a critical
financial support base for al-Qaeda, the Taliban, LeT
(Lashkar-e-Taiba), and other terrorist groups, including Hamas. It is
well known that Britain remains a haven for Islamist jihadis - but no
actions have been taken against London, thus far.
Any adequate protection of the population against terror requires a
clear picture of the role of Britain and Saudi Arabia in protecting
and nurturing al-Qaeda, and what purpose it serves. That is the
purpose of this review.
Al-Qaeda and 9/11
There is no dearth of evidence to show that the al-Qaeda leaders and
operatives who were eventually arrested were functioning from Britain
before 9/11. There are also documented reports which show the City of
London's laundering of narcotics-generated money of various terrorist
groups, as well as the presence of a large number of Britons operating
as terrorists in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas.
Most of these exposés occurred following the 9/11 event, giving an
impression that the terrorists had gathered strength, and were
operating with impunity from various parts of the world, only after
9/11. However, looking back at the British role prior to the attacks,
it becomes clear that the British and Saudis, each for their own
purpose, had joined hands years ago to bring al-Qaeda into existence.
Al-Qaeda's targets of attack were American and Iranian interests.
After the Saudi-Pakistani military-backed Taliban had secured control
over Kabul in 1996, al-Qaeda moved into Afghanistan to garner strength
and secure control over the opium money - the age-old currency of the
British empire - generated in Afghanistan.
But years before the 9/11 event, in which the Saudi involvement is
impossible to refute, al-Qaeda was in the process of formation.
Al-Qaeda was never a consolidated group that functioned under a
definite hierarchy, but was rather a loosely-assembled group of
jihadists, most of whom were local, and dependent on money from the
core group, known as al-Qaeda, that operated directly under the
British-Saudi control. The only commonality among these groups, other
than being terrorists, is that they considered America - and not the
West as a whole - and the Shi'as, as their greatest enemies.
While these two objectives had posed no problem to Britain, who had
kept Iran at the top of its enemies list since the ouster of Reza Shah
Pahlavi, the Saudi interest was not only to undermine Iran, but also
to spread their virulent form of Islam, Wahhabism, throughout the
Islamic world, and thus establish Saudi ownership of the Islamic
nations. Although al-Qaeda was for setting up a caliphate from the
Dardanelles to the Volga, it is also virulently anti-Shi'a - an
indicator of its total dependence on Saudi Arabia.
All Clues, All Roads Lead to London
That Britain harbors terrorists of all colors and creeds, but
particularly of the Islamic jihadi varieties, since the British Empire
basically drew the map of the Islamic countries and remained their
"protector," is well established by now. Some Americans, other than
those who have become such hard-core anglophiles that they would blame
someone else for criminal acts in order to protect Britain, and thus
endanger many American lives, have spoken out against the
British-harbored terrorists. One such individual is Bruce Riedel.
Riedel, a 29-year CIA veteran and counter-terrorism expert, told the
London Sunday Telegraph in February 2009, that "the British Pakistani
community is recognized as probably al-Qaeda's best mechanism for
launching an attack against North America. "The American security
establishment believes that danger continues and there's very intimate
cooperation between our security services to monitor that."
Riedel, who served three Presidents as a Middle East expert on the
White House National Security Council, added: "President Obama's
national security team are well aware that this is a serious threat."
Why have even hard-core anglophile Americans felt pressure to name
Britain as a potential terrorist threat?
In a Feb. 14, 2002 London Guardian article, "Allies point the finger
at Britain as al-Qaida's 'revolving door,' " writers Audrey Gillan,
Richard Norton-Taylor, and John Hooper in Berlin, Jon Henley in Paris,
and Giles Tremlett in Madrid, point out that "documents compiled in
Madrid, Milan, Paris and Hamburg and seen by the Guardian indicate
that most of the known attacks planned or executed by al-Qaida in the
past four years had links to Britain. Investigating magistrates,
police and intelligence officers in those cities believe that Islamist
spiritual leaders based in Britain played a key role in the
indoctrination and possibly even the authorization of terrorist
operations."
Since Britain is small geographically, its population is less than
one-third of Pakistan's, and it has Her Majesty's fabled intelligence
service, it is safe to assume that the terrorists are there because
they are under the protection of the British authorities.
The Guardian article noted that the investigators in France, Spain,
Germany, and Italy are adamant that at least seven top bin Laden
lieutenants have operated out of Britain in recent years. They claim
that Muslim clerics, such as Abu Qatada, allowed to openly preach
jihad in the U.K., were in fact spinning a "revolving door" to radical
Islam and to terrorism.
One source close to the French investigation told the Guardian that
before the events of Sept. 11, "Britain acted - and, to some extent,
may still act - as a kind of filter for parts of al-Qaeda. The main
European centers for spiritual indoctrination were London and
Leicester; any weak links were weeded out there. The new recruit would
then be sent to suffer in the camps in Afghanistan. After passing both
tests, the mojahid could take his place in the sleeper networks in
Europe." A senior German intelligence officer summed up the mood when
he told the Guardian: "All the clues lead to London. All the roads
lead to London."
Here is a short list of those terrorists who prove that Britain was
indeed the terrorists' "revolving door."
Abu Qatada: A Spanish judge, Baltasar Garzon, has stated that Sheikh
Abu Qatada, the London-based Muslim cleric who ran the Four Feathers
Centre near Baker Street, is "the spiritual leader of mojahedin [holy
warriors] across Europe." Qatada was sentenced to death in absentia in
Jordan and is accused by the U.S., Spain, France, and Algeria of being
a key influence in the 9/11attacks. Videos of his speeches were found
in the Hamburg flat of Mohammad Atta, the hijackers' ringleader.
Djamel Beghal: Beghal, a French Algerian who was detained in Dubai, a
Britain-controlled offshore banking and drug-and-gun-running center,
who was questioned about his plot to bomb the American Embassy in
Paris, told police he had been a follower of Qatada, who was a key
figure in his radical conversion. Beghal moved from France to
Leicester, U.K. where he worshipped at the Mosque of Piety, and
travelled to London to listen to Qatada preach. Beghal is suspected of
having recruited Zacarias Moussaoui, the former South Bank University
student suspected of being part of the 9/11 plot; and Richard Reid,
the alleged "shoe bomber," who tried to blow up a Paris-Miami flight
in transit to terrorist training camps in Afghanistan.
Kamel Daoudi: The Guardian also noted that French authorities point to
the confession of Daoudi, who had been living in Beghal's flat in
Paris, was also found in Beghal's other flat in Leicester. He is said
to be the unit's computer expert.
Abu Abdallah: Daoudi told French police that he met an al-Qaeda
guerrilla in Leicester called Abu Abdallah. Abdallah's identity
remains uncertain, but French investigators believe he may be among
the 11 men arrested in Leicester in early 2002. In addition, Baghdad
Meziane and Brahim Benmerzouga were arrested in Leicester in January
2002. Meziane is accused of "directing the activities of al-Qaida."
Abu Doha: Five months before the attacks on America, Italy's special
operations police produced a report which identified two al-Qaeda
networks in Europe. Both were run by Islamist extremists based in
Britain - "one made up principally of Algerians and led by Abu Doha;
the second made up predominantly of Tunisians and led by the Tunisian
Seifallah Ben Hassine."
Spain points to four more British-based bin Laden lieutenants,
identifying them by their pseudonyms in an indictment. Spanish police
taped a series of cryptic phone calls from a caller in Britain using
the codename "Shakur."One of these, according to Judge Garzon, shows
that Shakur knew of the upcoming Sept. 11 attacks. "In our classes, we
have entered the field of aviation, and we have even cut the bird's
throat," he said on Aug. 27.
Pakistan has repeatedly reported the influx of British Muslims working
hand-in-glove with the terrorists along the Afghan-Pakistan borders.
Many of these terrorists are drug-runners and chemists refining opium
into more expensive heroin. Pakistani intelligence has intercepted
talks among these British Muslim terrorists, and the International
Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) have recovered T-shirts carrying the
logos of British soccer teams.
Money to be made in Harboring Terrorists
In 2001, a French parliamentary report exposed the connection between
the drug money laundered through the City of London and the
narco-terrorists. In a Guardian article Oct. 10, 2001, John Henley,
citing an exhaustive 180-page French report, wrote that up to 40
companies, banks, and individuals based in Britain can legitimately be
suspected of maintaining direct or indirect relations with the
narco-terrorists. The report is based on interviews with senior
Metropolitan Police officers, leading City financial regulators, and
European judges investigating cross-border financial crimes in Spain,
Belgium, and France.
According to a 70-page addendum, "The Economic Environment of Osama
bin Laden," compiled by an independent team of financial experts
whose identity has not been revealed, and attached to the French
report, the structure of bin Laden's financial network bears a
striking similarity to that used by the collapsed BCCI bank for its
fraudulent operations in the 1980s.
The report establishes numerous links between bin Laden and
international arms and oil traders, and even members of the Saudi
elite. It also pinpoints the relationship and its subsequent breakdown
between bin Laden and his family's holding company, the Saudi Binladin
Group, and its multiple subsidiaries, investments, and offshoots in
Europe. The names of half a dozen former BCCI clients and officials,
including Ghaith Pharaon, wanted by the U.S. authorities for fraud,
and Khalid bin Mahfouz, a Saudi banker who was closely involved with
the bank before it was closed down by the Bank of England in 1991,
recur throughout the report, and are directly linked to Osama bin
Laden through banks, holding companies, foundations, and charities, at
least one of which, the International Development Foundation, is
headquartered in London. "This document clearly shows the great
permeability of the British banking and financial system and the
fragility of the controls operated at its points of entry," the French
report concludes.
Many of the individuals concerned, several with British connections,
were also involved in various senior roles with BCCI, the now-defunct
drug bank set up in the 1970s, the report says. Hundreds of banks and
companies are mentioned, from Sudan, Geneva, and London, to Oxford,
the Bahamas, and Riyadh, Henley wrote. "The convergence of financial
and terrorist interests, apparent particularly in Great Britain and in
Sudan, does not appear to have been an obstacle with regard to the
objectives pursued [by bin Laden],"the report concludes. "The
conjunction of a terrorist network attached to a vast financing
structure is the dominant trait of operations conducted by bin Laden."
Britain also spends some money in nurturing the terrorists. On June 7,
2011, The Guardian reported the admission by British Home secretary
Theresa May, that the money from the £63 million anti-radicalization
budget has been given to "the very extremist organizations that
Prevent should have been confronting." May conceded saying Operation
Prevent, originally launched in 2007 to counter the growth of
home-grown terrorism, "failed to tackle the extremist ideology that
not only undermines the cohesion of our society, but also inspires
would-be terrorists to seek to bring death and destruction to our
towns and cities."
The British-Saudi Nexus
The British intervention in Iraq in 2003 was, in reality, the
continuation of the British effort to unleash Shi'a-Sunni violence, a
Saudi project as well, that began in the post-World War I Arabia. In
the 1920s, Britain set about carving up Southwest Asia to serve its
own needs. Gertrude Bell, a spy and operative for the British Empire,
was at the forefront of creating "nations" and in king-making. In
1921, Bell drew the borders of Iraq, and so created disastrous
problems for generations to come, which ultimately would lead to war.
Newcastle University historian Jim Crow said: "Without that imperial
carve-up, Iraq would not be in the state it is in today. Gertrude Bell
was one of two or three Britons who were instrumental in the creation
of the Arab states in the Middle East that were favorable to Britain."
In 1919, at the Paris Conference ending World War I, Bell argued for
the establishment of independent Arab emirates for the area previously
covered by the Ottoman Empire. The Arab delegation, which was actually
under Bell's control, was led by Faisal Saeed al-Ismaily, a Bedouin
Sunni steeped in the orthodox version of the religion, born in Taif
(now, Saudi Arabia), the third son of the Grand Sharif of Mecca.
Planting a Sunni Bedouin in historical Mesopotamia was a long-term
British design which served a number of purposes for the Empire. To
begin with, a desert Bedouin and feudal potentate was surely not
acceptable as a ruler to the Shi'a-majority Iraqis, who had a strong
sense of their heritage. In addition, Faisal played a role back then
in forming the British-Sunni-Israeli nexus to perpetuate the British
Empire's role in what is known today as the Middle East.
That tradition of British geopolitics, backed by Saudi Arabia's oil
money, has continued to create terrorists and produce violence in the
Muslim world. In recent days, bribing the Saudis by the British
empire-promoters, such as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair,
was the business model.
In the April 17, 2009 EIR article, "BAE Al-Yamamah Scandal Back in the
Headlines," Jeffrey Steinberg wrote about "the case of BAE Systems
(formerly British Aerospace), the giant British arms cartel, and its
unprecedented barter deal with Saudi Arabia, a deal known as
Al-Yamamah ('The Dove'). The Anglo-Saudi Al-Yamamah deal was, and
remains, far more than an unusual oil-for-weapons barter scheme.

Why Anna Hazare should not win this battle
CP Surendran
18 August 2011, 11:52 PM IST
A most comical anti-corruption opera is being staged all over the
country under the leadership of Anna Hazare, who in his moral tyranny
is actually beginning to look like Mahatma Gandhi. This itself is a
bit of laugh: when a man wants to be someone else eventually
transmigration of the soul and nose happens. It only remains for Anna
to hold the Dandi March.
But the real reason why this anti-corruption campaign is looking like
an over-stretched Johnny Lever joke is that the people largely
constituting the movement have happily externalized corruption as if
it's an event happening outside themselves.
The fact is that the petite bourgeoisie-auto rickshaw drivers, and
constables, if Haryana Police Sangathan support for Jan Lok Pal's bill
is any indication, and low paid government officials and assorted
elements-have no idea that they are very much part of the corruption.
They believe it is a disease outside them, primarily endemic to the
government and its institutions, when they are active players in the
drama.
The others who are a part of the movement, including the youngsters,
who this lookist country swears by, are there for an opportunity to
hold candles and chant Sarojini Naidu kind of poems which normally
begin: O, deliverer… The youth will hold a candle and even burn a
finger from the dripping wax, but when it comes to admission, if an
IIT director or an engineering college dean will accept cash for
seats, they will gladly part with it.
For one with passing interest in the Lokpal politics, the only major
difference in the bills drafted by the government and Anna apart from
bringing the PM into the bill's ambit, seems to be that the government
wants to set up a separate investigative agency while Anna and his
team want an existing investigating agency like the CBI to report to
the Lokpal committee. That would eventually mean the Lokpal evolving
into a parallel power vortex, and might make Parliament redundant.
In other words, those whom you elected will not be of as much
consequence as those self-appointed or government nominated Lokpal
committee members. That is a fraught process, and actually might
create more unaccountability and corruption.
That is one part of the joke. The other, equally entertaining part has
been the Congress-led UPA government's complete and visible bankruptcy
of ideas to tackle an agitation outside party structures. Much the
same happened before the Emergency when Jayaparakash Naryan led a
movement that cut across party lines against the Indira Gandhi led
Congress government, which panicked and declared an Emergency.
Anna's movement is mostly apolitical. And the support it has drawn,
for all its faults, is an indication how political parties and other
democratic institutions have failed to represent people, or inspire
faith. Across the world, memberships of political parties are
decreasing. Alternate people's groupings with environmental and
ethical themes are gaining strength. In Europe and America where
democracies are institutionally stronger and fairer than in India,
this could be explained as an evolution.
But, in India where fairness woven into the system is at best fraying,
when a movement is directed primarily against its institutions and the
political party in power as well as the ones in Opposition are
fumbling in their response, a movement like this can have dire
consequences. Clearly, the parties have failed to represent the
people, which is why a moral tyrant like Anna is holding the
government to ransom. When institutions fail, individuals take up
their role. .And if Anna wins, the nature of Indian politics will
change.
It'd be fun to see who were the advisors who landed a wimp like Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh into the Lok Pal soup. A party that can't
argue its case against a retired army truck driver whose only strength
really is a kind of stolid integrity and a talent for skipping meals
doesn't deserve to be in power. Power goes to people who love it. Anna
Hazare loves nothing more than power.

THE RISE OF THE COMPUTER STATE
The Threat to Our Freedom
Dr.Babu Suseelan
In 1948 George Orwell wrote that turned out to be his final work, the
classic 1984. It drew a picture of a chilling future in which the
world had fallen under the sway of three great totalitarian
governments.
The country that comprised what has been Western Europe, Britain and
the United States and the so called Oceania was ruled by Big Brother
state. Its citizens had been divested of all pretence of privacy, and
hence liberty.
Books, movies, play-everything was censored, of course. History was
rewritten to suit current propaganda needs. Thought police monitored
behaviour patterns to detect possibly deviant attitudes. Sophisticated
listening devices turned in the most intimate conversations.
And perhaps the most effective means of control was the two-way
television set that looked into every room at office, factory or home.
The individual never was free from the surveillance of the security
forces.
And yet Orwell, with his vivid imagination, was unable to foresee the
actual shape of the threat that would exist in 2011. It turns out to
be the ubiquitous computer and its ancillary communication networks.
Our privacy is being invaded, and more and more of the experiences
which should be solely our own are finding their way into electronic
files that the curious can scrutinize at the punch button.
The airline companies have a computer record of our travels-where we
went and how long we stayed and, possibly, with whom we traveled. The
car rental firms have a computer record of the days and we went
afield. Hotel computers can fill in myriad of detail about our stays
away from home, and the credit card computers know a great deal about
the meals we ate, and with how many guests.
The computer files at the Internal Revenue Service (Income Tax
Department) the census Bureau, the Social Security Administration, the
various security agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation
and our own insurance companies know everything there is to know about
our economic, social and marital status, even down to our past
illnesses and the sate of our health.
Now computers around the world can talk one another, when they are
interlinked, they can spew out a roomful of data on each o us that
will leave us naked before whoever gains access to the information.
In the rushed clutter of our daily lives, it is easy to lose sight of
the combined power that the computers and the electronic communication
links have come to exert over almost every aspect o our lives.
The enormous benefits provided by computer technology offer another
kind of camouflage. The comforts and conveniences of the computer make
thinking about its potentially negative effects something an exercise
in self-denial.
The ability to rack large numbers of individuals and the concentration
of power are not the only contribution of the computer. It also
increases the influence of the major bureaucracies by giving these
organizations a method by which they can anticipate the future
thoughts and activities of groups of people. Automatic reporting
system called behavior scan can keep track of every single item
family's purchase at their local supermarket.
Today fewer than 2 percent of the American people work for themselves.
And of the remaining 98 percent, almost half are employed by large
corporations that collect detailed information about the education,
health, family and work habits of their employees.
The vast scale of information collected by government agencies,
private corporations and institutions, such as schools, colleges,
universities, hospitals etc are called Transactional Information. This
Transactional Information automatically documents the daily lives of
almost every person in the U.S. Transactional Information is collected
and stored about the telephone use, banking habits, health history of
everyone who lives in America, rich and poor, white and black,
Republican and Democrat.
The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), CIA (Central Intelligence
Agency) and NASA(National Security Agency) can collect, channel and
sort out information on every resident in any part of the world. They
have unlimited funds and super computers. Their extraordinary
power-enhanced by the lack of precise legal mandate, the absence of
effective oversight and a world of mass communications has been
further enlarged by its incredible super computers. The capacity,
built on billions of dollars of secret appropriations, includes a
formidable electronic eavesdropping network of satellites, thousands
of earthbound listening posts and what, almost certainly is the
world's largest single computer complex in Washington, D.C.
The increase in the computerization of society has led to the
construction of a large number of data bases that are electronic
windows into the most intimate details of people's lives.
Now computers can record and identify finger prints, voice and eye
color of all American residents. Still, hunger or personal information
is now growing explosively in almost every sector of economy and
everyday life, from health care to entertainment, from banking to
supermarket sale. It is being spurred and sharpened by powerful market
forces and ever more pervasive computer technology, including digital
mapping tools and so-called "data-mapping" software that blast
commercial value from newly linked data bases of unprecedented size.
New records of private lives and public records pass through many
eyes. Yet Americans have no idea what is happening to the stream of
personal data that they shed just by living in the modern world.
The electronic deposits keep growing with the pulse of daily life:
telephone calls, check out computers, automatic transaction machines
(ATM), and electronic bridge tolls, the street gaze security cameras,
plastic insurance cards imprinted with all personal information that
have become identity's common currency—and its easy counterfeit.
The internet, where every keystroke can be achieved, is now the most
dramatic embodiment of what technology and commerce afford in the real
world: the pooling of ever more vast stores of date, and the easy
retrieval of individual specks with no one's say- so.
This networked world of information is an economic powerhouse that
creates new jobs, new services and astonishing efficiencies. It also
turns commonplace transactions into little revelations. When a clerk
puts a supermarket discount card through the scanner, for example, a
data base links the shopper's identity with the bar code on every item
bought. A love of rich chocolate cookies not only can be tracked over
time, matched with an individual's address, age, weight and ethnicity,
with marital status and credit standing and even with religious ties,
to name just a few of the personal facts being bought and sold
wholesale in today's booming information market.
Personal privacy is impossible. People helplessly stand naked in this
electronic information age. Battle for privacy is an uphill fight.
There is no reliable expectation of privacy in America. Through the
use of data banks the state and private organizations can transform
themselves into omnipotent parents and the rest of society stand as
helpless children. Modern computer replace wisdom and knowledge into
information and data. These data is used to manipulate people. And
people are thus alienated from the society it has created. As result
drug addiction, alcoholism, suicide, sexual abuse, murder, divorce and
mental illness are on the increase one thing is clear.
In twenty first century, many functions of society will be taken over
by the computers. They just don't seem to be any way the
computerization of the society will be stopped. But there are choices
in how we respond to this apparently inevitable tied. We can build a
society like that of classical Greece, where slaves-in our case
computers-allow us to focus our thinking on philosophy, art and
literature. Or we can build an Orwellian state, where we become
dependent upon technology and the people who run it. A great deal is
at stake in this choice, and we have to be very careful.
