Despite the prominence of religious believers in politics and culture,
America has shrinking congregations, growing dissatisfaction with religious
leaders and more people who do not think about faith, according to a new
study by a Duke University expert. In "American Religion: Contemporary
Trends," author Mark Chaves argues that over the last generation or so,
religious belief in the U.S. has experienced a "softening" that effects
everything from whether people go to worship services regularly to whom they
marry. Far more people are willing to say they don't belong to any religious
tradition today than in the past, and signs of religious vitality may be
camouflaging stagnation or decline.

process and insist that, in humans, SCNT does not, in fact, make a cloned
embryo as it does with our animals friends. Instead SCNT in humans makes
only "a formless group of cells" totally devoid of any humanity at all. In
the cloning advocates eyes, pretending that SCNT doesn't make cloned embryos
means problem solved. Create and destroy human life by pretending no human
life is created and destroyed. Except we know they are being disingenuous.

On June 23, 2011 I released a four and half minute video "Gadi Adelman On
God". The video concentrated on the fact that during the PGA U.S. Open on
television, NBC had played the "Pledge of allegiance" on two occasions;
however both times it was played they edited out the words "under God". It
seems to be more and more common these days in the U.S. for the word "God"
or any reference to religion to be removed. Just this past June, *American
Thinker *reported about a ban on the word God at military funerals..

The question — what size earthquakes can U.S. nuclear power plants withstand
— seems urgent in light of this week's surprising magnitude-5.8 quake on the
East Coast. Alas, there's no simple answer and that worries industry
critics. Earthquakes are routinely measured by magnitude, or energy
released. But the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)requires the nation's
104 nuclear reactors to withstand a predicted level of ground motion, or
acceleration — something called g-force. What does that mean,
magnitude-wise? "I don't have what that translates into … unfortunately,"
NRC spokesman David McIntyre says. The agency released a statement Thursday
to clarify its "earthquake measurements and design criteria," but it does
not say what ground motion each reactor can handle. This muddiness heightens
the concerns of industry critics, who have urged stricter safety rules after
reactors at Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant nearly melted down due
to a magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11. "The Virginia
earthquake is now our local 911 call to stop delaying the implementation of
stricter safety standards," Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., wrote in a letter
this week to the NRC

Perhaps the astronomers are right; that's the best-case scenario. A less
pleasant prospect is that the extraterrestrials might behave the way we
intelligent beings have behaved whenever we have discovered other previously
unknown intelligent beings on earth, like unfamiliar humans or chimpanzees
and gorillas. Just as we did to those beings, the extraterrestrials might
proceed to kill, infect, dissect, conquer, displace or enslave us, stuff us

Commentary: Someone wants a war in the Middle East

Something extremely important and exceedingly dangerous is unfolding in a
most explosive part of the globe, but it is receiving only minimal attention
by the media and by world leaders. An outbreak of violence in Southern
Israel, Gaza, and along the Egyptian border, triggered by a recent attack
against Israelis civilians, could easily escalate into much more serious
fighting.
A new war between Israelis and Palestinians right now would have immediate,
horrific repercussions for the people who live there. It would also have
potentially disastrous consequences for those who want freedom and democracy
in the Middle East, as well as those in the West who would like to see a
moderate Arab world emerge from the regional wave of popular uprisings.
It began on Aug. 18, when an attack against an Israeli passenger bus —
terrorism by any definition— killed eight Israelis, four of them members of
the same family.
Israel immediately shot back, killing the head of a group called the
Palestinian Popular Resistance Committees (PRC). The attack left dead four
PRC members and a young boy who was with them. Since then, Palestinians have
fired more than 160 rockets into Israeli cities. At least one Palestinian
missile landed in Egypt, injuring an Egyptian woman. Israel has fired back,
targeting other militant leaders. More civilians have died on both sides. As
always, Palestinians are aiming — and occasionally hitting — civilian
targets. Israelis are aiming at militant targets, but innocent civilians are
also getting killed by Israeli fire.
A truce accepted by Israel and Hamas has not held. With every missile
launched from Gaza, with hundreds of thousands of anxious Israelis rushing
into shelters, there is more pressure on Israel to launch a larger
offensive. Somebody clearly wants to provoke a war between Israelis and
Palestinians.
The key question is: Who would benefit from war at this moment? The answer
is long and troubling.
The list of potential beneficiaries of a Palestinian-Israeli war includes
Syria's Bashar Assad, the Iranian regime, Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood,
Hezbollah in Lebanon, possibly Hamas in Gaza, and certainly radical
Islamists all over the Arab world. The list of losers from a new war
includes, first of all, the civilian populations of Israel and Gaza. Other
losers would include those fighting to overthrow the regime in Syria, along
with pro-democracy forces all over the Middle East and their supporters in
the U.S., Europe and elsewhere.
The last thing Israel wants now is another war. Israel is worried about
relations with Egypt, about Palestinian plans for a unilateral declaration
of statehood at the United Nations, and about the turmoil in surrounding
countries. It would have much to lose and little to gain in a major
conflict.
Relations with Egypt reached a new low in the aftermath of the bus attack,
when Israeli forces pursuing the militants — some of whom were wearing
Egyptian army uniforms — apparently killed several Egyptian policemen.
Israel, eager to preserve ties, has offered to carry out a joint
investigation with Cairo.
As Egypt moves through its political transition, the views of the "street"
carry much more weight. In case of war, the inevitable images of Israeli
bombs slamming into Gaza would create pressure for authorities to allow
Egyptian volunteers to fight alongside Palestinians. It is likely that
Hezbollah would also attack from Lebanon, and Syria, too, would be tempted
to join in.
For Egypt's Islamic Brotherhood and the even more radical political forces
in the country, an Israeli-Palestinian war would come as a fantastic gift,
especially as the country gears up for elections.
An Egyptian newspaper reports that some of the men who launched the Aug. 18
attacks were, in fact, Egyptian citizens.
Syria's dictator would also welcome a war. The pictures of the fighting
would grab the world's attention by the lapels and leave the Syrian
opposition, whose members Assad is slaughtering, weak and forgotten.
Similarly, Iran and Hezbollah, whose key ally in Damascus is in danger,
would rejoice in a new war
For Hamas, a war would be a double-edged sword. A massive Israeli onslaught
in Gaza could be devastating, but it would also rally support for its side
and away from the rival Fatah. Hamas may prefer to avoid the risk.
The world's media tend to ignore or minimize the important Palestinian
rockets crashing on Israeli cities, even when they kill civilians, as the
recent ones have done. But this is a critical story. We should all pay close
attention. World leaders should intensify efforts to bring an end to the
violence, particularly at this pivotal moment in history.

while adding new sanctions against the Syrian regime. Are US bombers far
behind?"

Today's police are armed with an incredible array of sophisticated devices

This week on 'The Hal Lindsey Report'
You may be tired of hearing me say it, but it's the truth. Israel is in more
danger today than any time in her recent history. And each time I've said it
in the past, it's been true, then, too. Of course, if you're familiar with
the prophetic scenario for the final days of this Age, this information
comes as no surprise for you.
The threats to Israel will continue to increase until great war erupts
around her. Eventually, Jesus Christ Himself will return to this earth to
stop the carnage and restore the earth to its fullness.
But even though it comes as no shock, we are still admonished to pray for
the peace of Jerusalem. And the "Report" this week will give you plenty to
pray about.
In September, the Arab League and the Palestinians plan to ask the United
Nations General Assembly to recognize the West Bank, Gaza, and East
Jerusalem (including the Temple Mount) as the sovereign nation of Palestine.
You talk about Pandora's Box or, at least, a can of worms! The General
Assembly has no standing to make such a declaration legal, but it will still
complicate Israel's affairs immensely.
The Palestinians also want to ask the Security Council -- which is the real
United Nations and does have some legal teeth -- to formally recognize
Palestine. President Obama has stated that the US will veto such a
resolution, but then he and his administration turn around and use the
possibility of a non-veto to bludgeon Israel into following his dictates.
One of those dictates is that Israel must apologize to Turkey for
interdicting the blockade-busting "humanitarian flotilla" in June, 2010. If
you recall, when the Israelis boarded the Mavi Marmara, they were attacked
by Turkish thugs and hired mercenaries. Though the Israeli commandos were
armed mostly with non-lethal weapons, in the ensuing battle, nine members of
the flotilla were killed.
Although the United Nations and the West eventually confirmed that the
Israeli-Egyptian naval blockade of Gaza was legal and the Israelis acted
within their rights, President Obama is siding with Turkish Prime Minister
Tayyip Erdogan in demanding that Israel apologize. Of course, it cannot. To
do so would be tantamount to an admission of guilt. But that's what Erdogan
wants so he can use it to further delegitimize Israel in the eyes of the
world and enhance his own standing in the Arab/Muslim world.
And guess what. The American administration is publicly hinting that if
Israel doesn't apologize, then, according to Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton, the White House might suddenly "find itself unable to continue
building opposition to a unilateral Palestinian declaration of statehood at
the UN...."

On top of those onrushing worries, last Thursday Israel was shaken to its
core. As many as two dozen Palestinian terrorists left Gaza and traveled
down the Sinai to a point just above the Israeli seaside resort of Eilat.
Once there, they moved across the open border between Egypt and Israel and
launched a two-hour attack that left 8 Israelis dead and more than 40
wounded.
In the battle between Israeli security forces and the escaping terrorists
that followed the attacks, three Egyptian policemen were killed. When
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak suggested that Egypt had lost control of
the Sinai (which it has), the Egyptian government (the military junta) went
ballistic. It immediately threatened to withdraw Egypt's ambassador to
Israel and flood the Sinai with Egyptian troops. Since that action would
violate the 30-year-old Israeli-Egyptian peace deal, that would mean that
it's probably over. And that means that Israel now has a third front to
worry about.
After profuse apologies from Barak, the Egyptian government appears to have
backed-off a little and is now only "considering" removing its ambassador
until an investigation of the incident is completed and further profuse
apologies are received.
But that's not all. Over the weekend -- ostensibly in retaliation for Israel
eliminating the leadership of the terrorists responsible for the Eilat
massacre -- Hamas and its associates started firing missiles and rockets
into southern Israel again.
More than 100 rockets were fired over the weekend alone. At least 2 Israelis
were killed, several critically injured, and many homes, schools,
businesses, and automobiles were damaged. Imagine going about your daily
business always wondering whether a rocket -- filled with nails, ball
bearings, and shrapnel -- is going to drop out of the sky onto the road
ahead of you, or even through the roof of your home and into your bedroom,
or your child's bedroom.
That's how Israelis in the Negev live each day.
Finally, so many of the economies in the European Union are on the verge of
crashing and burning, that Angela Merkel of Germany and Nicolas Sarkozy of
France feel compelled to make public statements about their "absolute will
to defend the Euro." Sarkozy is even calling for a "true European economic
government." But the citizens of some of the European nations that are being
bankrupted to bail out the financial institutions that have bailed out the
socialist-welfare states, are saying "no more."
Yet, despite the will of their people, the leaders seem determined to do
whatever is necessary to salvage the corrupt welfare states of the EU. Why?
I think it's supernatural. The Bible says that in the last days, men will
not even be able to think in their own best interests.
The emerging reality is that there may quickly come a point where the
nations of the European Union will have to decide whether to break-up and go
their separate ways by returning to their sovereign currencies and
identities, or surrender their national independence and treasure and submit
themselves to a single, European government. I'm betting on the latter.
Now, there are some out there who dismiss this idea because they do not
believe the EU, which has morphed and warped its shape and identity in
various ways over the last 50 years, will have a leading role in the last
days' prophetic picture. And that's their privilege. I personally think
we're seeing the prophetic pieces falling into place.

CAMBRIAN SHRIMP EYES ARE "SURPRISINGLY ADVANCED" [Excerpts]
Dragonflies dart with exceeding dexterity as they avoid obstacles and prey
on other flying insects. This is made possible by the accuracy with which
their eyes allow them to perceive their surroundings.
In fact, arthropods such as dragonflies and shrimp have some of the best
optical equipment in the known world (Thomas, B. Shrimp Eye May Inspire New
DVD Technology. ICR News. Posted on icr.org November 4, 2009, accessed July
6, 2011). If these advanced visual systems resulted from millions of years
of evolutionary trial and error, one would expect to see a progression of
simple-to-complicated eyes in fossils ascending earth's rock layers. But
fully formed, advanced compound eyes have now been discovered on Australia's
Kangaroo Island among Cambrian fossils-far too early to fit the evolutionary
story.
A University of Adelaide online video described the Cambrian compound eye as
"surprisingly advanced in many respects. It shows that primitive creatures
rapidly evolved powerful vision during the 'Cambrian explosion.'" This
"explosion" refers to the sudden appearance of representatives from every
single animal phylum-alive or extinct-in the lowermost fossil-bearing
Cambrian rocks, which evolutionists insist were deposited over 500 million
years ago. But is "rapid evolution" really what this fossil shows?
The fossil compound eye the researchers examined, the most advanced yet
discovered in Cambrian fossils, had over 3,000 lenses. It was compared, both
in a University of Adelaide press release and the accompanying video, with
the eyes of robber fly insects, which have excellent motion-detecting vision
that enables them to hunt in flight.
Reams of genetic information are required to construct compound eyes like
those found in these fossils, and each bit of genetic information is
supposed to have been generated by a lucky mutation. The problem is that
according to the calculations performed by evolutionary researchers, 216
million years are needed to acquire just two coordinated mutations in
sequence, at least in humans (Durrett, R. and D. Schmidt. 2008. Waiting for
Two Mutations: With Applications to Regulatory Sequence Evolution and the
Limits of Darwinian Evolution. Genetics. 180 (3): 1501-1509.). Compound eyes
needed thousands of coordinated mutations to have occurred in only 30
million years. In essence, evolutionists have refuted their own story.
The assertion that these eyes are the result of "evolutionary innovation" is
clearly false. The alternative is that they were created. Advanced eyes in
Cambrian fossils are no surprise to Bible-believers, who understand that God
made shrimp with fully formed eyes from the beginning.

Scientists engaged in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI)
work under the assumption that there is, in fact, intelligent life out there
to be found. A new analysis may crush their optimism.
To calculate the likelihood that they'll make radio contact with
extraterrestrials, SETI scientists use what's known as the Drake Equation.
Formulated in the 1960s by Frank Drake of the SETI Institute in California,
it approximates the number of radio-transmitting civilizations in our galaxy
at any one time by multiplying a string of factors: the number of stars, the
fraction that have planets, the fraction of those that are habitable, the
probability of life arising on such planets, its likelihood of becoming
intelligent and so on.
The values of almost all these factors are highly speculative. Nonetheless,
Drake and others have plugged in their best guesses, and estimate that there
are about 10,000 tech-savvy civilizations in the galaxy currently sending
signals our way - a number that has led some scientists to predict that
we'll detect alien signals within two decades.
But in a new paper published on arXiv.org, astrophysicist David Spiegel at
Princeton University and physicist Edwin Turner at the University of Tokyo
argue that this thinking is dead wrong. Using a statistical method called
Bayesian reasoning, they argue that the life here on Earth could be common,
or it could be extremely rare - there's no reason to prefer one conclusion
over the other. With their new analysis, Spiegel and Turner say they have
erased the one Drake factor scientists felt confident about and replaced it
with a question mark. "Although life began on this planet fairly soon after
the Earth became habitable, this fact is consistent with ... life being
arbitrarily rare in the Universe," the authors state. In the paper, they
prove this statement mathematically.
Their result doesn't mean we're alone - only that there's no reason to think
otherwise. "[A] Bayesian enthusiast of extraterrestrial life should be
significantly encouraged by the rapid appearance of life on the early Earth
but cannot be highly confident on that basis," the authors conclude. Our own
existence implies very little about how many other times life has arisen.

A speaker at a recent state-sponsored meeting on the Mississippi Personhood
Amendment has been exposed as something other than what he claimed to be.
Vincent Lachina attended the meeting in Tupelo, wearing a clerical
collar...stating he was ordained in the Southern Baptist Convention.
"And as it turns out, he is a homosexual activist and a chaplain for Planned
Parenthood out of Seattle, Washington," states Les Riley, who heads the
Personhood Mississippi movement. American Family Association's Jacob Dawson
discovered the truth about Lachina while in the audience and revealed his
discovery there.
Moreover, a subsequent check by Live Action with the Southern Baptist
Convention reveals Lachina is not listed as ordained in the SBC.
"... That's not a surprise," Riley responds. "You know, I always tell people
when I go out and talk about the Personhood Amendment that we have to
understand that people who will kill babies for a living, people who will
harm women -- particularly people like Planned Parenthood with a genocidal
agenda -- will lie to keep it going."
According to information about Lachina that has since been removed from the
Planned Parenthood Washington website, he is actually aligned with two
left-wing denominations -- the American Baptist Conference and the United
Church of Christ.
