Swaying gently from side to side in what looks like human crop circles on
top of a Bulgarian mountain, it's a far cry from how most people see in the
New Year.

Instead of drinking until dawn, members of the White Brotherhood today
celebrated the passing of the summer season and the start of a new 12
months.

Thousands of followers, who practice a synthesis of Christianity and
Hinduism, dressed in white and sang spiritual songs as the sun came up over
the Rila Mountains.

They then performed a sacred dance, called Paneurhythmy, which pays tribute
to the movement of the planets and stars.

The event has been taking place each year since 1929. The movement, also
called Beinsa Duno, was founded by Bulgarian Petar Deunov, who died in 1944.

Followers place a heavy emphasis on brotherly love, a healthy diet and
living in harmony with nature.

I am a native of Bulgaria and I find the fourth picture especially

Hazare expands ambit of his crusade
August 20, 2011 3:17:55 PM

PTI | New Delhi

Anna Hazare's fast demanding a strong Lokpal to tackle corruption
crossed 100 hours here today, with the Gandhian expanding ambit of his
fight to include electoral reforms and a farmer-friendly land
acquisition law

As his fast entered the fifth day, his team said they were ready to
talk to the government but no such communication channels have been
opened so far but insisted the August 30 deadline set by the Gandhian
for passing of Jan Lokpal Bill should be met with.

With the government indicating that the deadline could not met with,
the Team said it appeared to be an exercise which will waste the time
of people and Parliamentarians and demanded that the Jan Lokpal Bill
be introduced in Tuesday.

Hazare, who addressed the gathering at Ramlila Maidan twice in the
day, said the funds in government treasuries were being threatened not
by thieves but from those guard it and the country is being threatened
by these traitors.

"Why should we fight? The funds in government treasuries are ours. The
treasuries are not threatened by thieves but by those who guards it.
The country is not betrayed by enemies but by these traitors," the
Gandhian said.

He told the gathering the fight will not end with the passage of
Lokpal Bill but they have be ready for a longer struggle for electoral
reforms as well as ensuring farmers' right to their land.

"I want to tell the youth of this country that this fight should not
be stopped with Lokpal alone. We have fight for removing the faults of
the present electoral reforms. Because of the fault in electoral
system, 150 criminals have reached Parliament," Hazare said.

Hazare said the country actually did not get "actual freedom" even
after 64 years of independence and the only change was that "the
whites have been replaced by the blacks".

"The same loot, same corruption, same rowdyism still exists," he said.

Touching upon the contentious issue of land acquisition, he said there
was a need to fight for a proper law regarding this.

"After the fight for Lokpal, we will also have to fight for farmers'
rights. Bring a law that ensures permission of gram sabhas before
acquiring land of farmers," Hazare said.

Noting that the chain of corruption should be broken, he said,
"Government is giving land to the companies which employs labourers
and suck their blood. They tell the labourers you ensure production or
else you will lose job.

"Is this democracy? All have come together to make money. The chain of
corruption has to be broken," he said.

Earlier, Hazare came to the podium at around 10 am as supporters
started pouring in Ramlila Maidan where he launched his protest
yesterday after coming out of Tihar Jail.

He said he has lost three-and-half kg in the last four days. "I feel a
little weak. But there is nothing to worry about it. The fight will go
on till we get a strong Lokpal," Hazare said in his brief address to
the gathering.

Activists Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia said the Team was ready to talk
to the government on the issue of Lokpal Bill but no one has
approached them.

"We are ready to talk to the government but there is no communication
from their side. Where should we go to talk and whom should we talk
to?" Kejriwal and Sisodia said.

Hazare had yesterday raised the political stakes by giving a deadline
to the government to pass the Jan Lokpal bill by August 30 failing
which he would continue his fast "till my last breath".

On the deadline, former Law Minister Shanti Bhushan said the
government can pass it within days if it has a "strong will" to do it.
"It can happen. I have been a Union Law Minister and I know how things
happen in government," he said.

Bhushan indicated that they were open to minor changes in the Jan
Lokpal Bill and said an assurance from the government to the Gandhian
on his demand will be like showing respect for the public sentiment
demanding action against corruption.

Asked whether the deadline was a little impractical, Kejriwal told
reporters, "If the government desires, it can pass 15 bills in five
minutes. But for the anti-corruption bill, they are taking more than
42 years. So we want to know how many more years will they take?"

The government version encourages corruption and saves the corrupt,
Kejriwal alleged and demanded that the Lokpal Bill introduced in
Parliament be "rejected completely" and the Jan Lokpal Bill be
replaced by it.

Reacting to newspaper advertisements seeking suggestions from public
on Lokpal Bill, Kejriwal said it appeared to be an exercise which will
waste the time of people and Parliamentarians.

"We appeared before the Standing Committee earlier and told them that
the present bill is actually for promotion of corruption and save the
corrupt people. It ends up in targeting those who complain against
corruption," he said.

Kejriwal said they had urged the Standing Committee to reject the bill
and send it back to Parliament. "It is wasting precious time on a
wrong and faulty bill," he said.

"This seeking of feedback is basically to divert attention," he said.

Asked about some MPs, including BJP's Varun Gandhi, planning to
introducing Jan Lokpal Bill as private bills, he said private bills do
not achieve much.

World's #9 Most Powerful Person Now Accused of Corruption --
Will She Fall?

Posted: 04/25/11 07:17 AM ET

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/cleo-paskal/worlds-9-most-powerful-pe_b_853132.html

New Delhi. Some of India's biggest fish are getting caught up in the
country's fast-growing wave of anti-corruption activity. In what could
be India's equivalent of a judicial jasmine revolution, previously
invulnerable politicians, business icons, and pillars of the community
are all nervously keeping their lawyers on speed-dial.

The anti-corruption push is an unprecedented coming together of myriad
facets of Indian society. Religious leaders are concerned about the
effects on morality and spiritual growth. NGOs speak of the effects on
the poor. The middle class is angry about its future being stifled by
a smothering blanket of day-to-day corruption. The intelligence
services see corruption a clear threat to national security. And the
business community, thanks to globalization, has seen how efficiently
things can operate without having to constantly pay bribes or be
tangled in red tape, and they want the same thing at home.

Even the Supreme Court is fed up, with Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy
saying about the vast sums of Indian money being illegally hidden away
in Liechtenstein Bank:

We are talking about the huge money. It is a plunder of the nation. It
is a pure and simple theft of the national money. We are talking about
mind-boggling crime.
The scandals are bursting on to the front pages fast and thick. Suresh
Kalmadi, a Congress Party politician and the former head of the
corruption-plagued Commonwealth Games, was arrested April 25.
According to a report by the Indian Comptroller and Auditor General,
the 2G spectrum scam alone, in which 2G licenses were sold off in a
manner that was, to say the least, less than transparent, cost close
to $40 billion in lost revenue.

All across India, people are saying enough is enough. And suddenly the
unthinkable is starting to happen. People considered above reproach,
or at least untouchable, are coming under the judicial cross-hairs. 2G
alone has seen charges laid against one former government minister and
several captains of industry.

And the latest high profile target is one of the biggest fish of all,
Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi, currently #9 on Forbes list of
the World's Most Powerful People.

Sonia Gandhi has one of the most remarkable life stories in
international politics. Born Edvige Antonia Albina Maino into a family
of modest means in rural Italy, she didn't even get a chance to
complete high school before heading to the UK for work. There she met
Rajiv Gandhi, son of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She
eventually married him and the young family moved in to Indira
Gandhi's New Delhi's home, putting her literally in the heart of
Indian politics.

After Indira Gandhi's assassination in 1984, Sonia's husband Rajiv
became Prime Minister. Following Rajiv's 1991 assassination by Tamil
terrorists, there were rumors that Sonia was going to put herself
forward as Prime Minister.

As she herself later said, she "could not walk past the portraits of
my husband, my mother-in-law and her father and not feel that I had
some responsibility to try and save the party they had given their
lives to."

Given her focus on the party, it was fitting that instead of becoming
Prime Minister, she ended up as President of the powerful Congress
Party. Politically, it proved to be a smart move as it gave her power
without direct responsibility -- while she is #9 on Forbes list of
power people, the actual Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, is
only #18. According to Forbes, "Gandhi remains the real power behind
the nuclear-tipped throne [...] she has cemented her status as true
heiress to the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty."

Her image is of a dutiful, submissive Indian wife, now widow. When her
husband was alive, she would walk behind him. In public she wears
saris. Although a devout Catholic, she is often photographed at Hindu
Temples. And like a good Indian mother, though she has decorously
pulled herself out of the race for Prime Minister, she is happy to
encourage her son, Rahul, to take the job.

However there have been growing, persistent murmurs about questionable
business deals and inexplicable exponential jumps in the personal
wealth of her and her family.

The allegations came out in the open in 1995 when M. D. Nalapat, then
Resident Editor (Delhi) of the world's largest English language
newspaper, the Times of India, began a groundbreaking series of
articles about Sonia.

The articles made the controversial (at the time) claim that the
public docility was just a ploy, and that Sonia actually had serious
political ambitions (later confirmed by her role in Congress). Also,
crucially, the series said that her desire for power wasn't simply
altruistic and that the wealth not only of her, but of her Italian
relatives, rose stratospherically after Rajiv Gandhi became Prime
Minister in 1984.

Nalapat's articles could not be ignored as he was one of India's most
respected journalists and had, throughout his career, taken on corrupt
politicians, social inequity and institutionalized discrimination.

This however was a 'topic too far'. While the facts in the article
were never refuted, Nalapat was forced out of journalism in 1998 and
moved into academics.

Next came public questions from another highly reputed source, Sten
Lindstrom, Sweden's special prosecutor investigating the pay-offs
associated with the sale of weapons by Bofors to the government of
India. His investigation showed that a close friend of Sonia's,
Ottavio Quattrocchi, has received kickbacks in the millions.

In 1998 Lindstrom gave an interview in which he said:

the Gandhis, particularly now Sonia, should explain how
Quattrocchi-owned companies got such fat sums as payoffs from the
Bofors deal. After all, what is the connection of Sonia and the Gandhi
family to Quattrocchi? Who introduced Quattrocchi and his AE Services
to Bofors? At least one thing is certainly known now. A part of the
payoffs definitely went to Quattrocchi. [...] the papers all pointed
to the Gandhi family.
Not only have the questions not been answered by Sonia, but in spite
of substantial evidence against him, Quattrocchi has managed to evade
prosecution in India, and has even had his kickback funds unfrozen
from overseas accounts.

Part of the genius of Sonia Gandhi is her ability to present herself
as a helpless victim, convincing even her political rivals not to fear
her as she is fatally flawed. In 1998, India was being led by BJP
Prime Minister Vajpayee. When Nalapat spoke with him about Sonia, he
was bluntly told to lay off, as, "so long as a white Christian lady is
head of the Congress Party, I [Vajpayee] and my party will always be
in power". Vajpayee and his party lost power to Sonia's Congress in
2004.

But the most serious threat to Sonia -- and, as she is at the apex of
the Congress Party, and so to Congress itself -- is now lying on the
desk of #18, the Prime Minister of India.

On April 15, former Law and Justice Minister and Harvard Professor Dr.
Subramanian Swamy asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for leave to lay
corruption charges against Sonia Gandhi. In a meticulously researched
200+ page submission Dr Swamy alleges Sonia Gandhi has been involved
in corruption in India since 1972 and personally benefited from the
Bofors scam (1986), has held billions in non-Indian bank accounts
since at least 1991, illegally profited from the Iraqi oil-for-food
deals (2002), and even accessed KGB payoffs during the Cold War.

The Prime Minister has three months to decide whether or not to grant
sanction to prosecute. If he doesn't, Dr. Swamy can take the case
directly to the Supreme Court, which under Chief Justice Kapadia is
showing a definite proclivity towards facilitating corruption cases.

While, so far, the corruption cases in India have caught up some
pretty big fish, if charges are laid against Sonia Gandhi, it won't
just be part of a wave, it will be a sea change.

Sonia Gandhi is not just an individual, she is the steely core of a
pillar of Indian politics. If she crumbles, it will shake the
foundations of the venerable Congress Party, and possibly leave a
gaping hole in the political scene. Meanwhile, a range of polarizing
and regional parties are ready to rush in and stake their claim. Given
the growing importance of India in our heavily globalized world, this
is not just an Indian story, this is one all should be following very
closely indeed.

Lokpal and the Three (Magsaysay) Musketeers

S Faizi

21 August 2011

While condemning the short detention of Anna Hazare and his
colleagues, it is nevertheless pertinent to understand what the
Magsaysay Award really is, especially in the wake of the United
States' official support to the anti-corruption agitation led by three
Magsaysay awardees (Anna Hazare, Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal).

Washington is a government that creates and protects systemic
corporate corruption across the world; a military machine that is at
perpetual war with the militarily weak countries of the global south;
a regime that is at the root of most of the corporate loot in India; a
regime that is rapidly making the planet uninhabitable; a regime to
which Manmohan Singh's government is readily obedient.

The game plan might look confusing - for Manmohan Singh too is
America's best friend - but it is simple enough if one looks at the
preceding game plans. For example: Mossad and the CIA trained the Sri
Lankan military and the LTTE at the same time (and called both of them
'monkeys'). Then there was America's strategy of fiercely
manufacturing jihadi terrorism in Afghanistan to fight the USSR, and
its subsequent use of the presence of the jihadis as an alibi for
occupying and destroying the country.

Now let us come straight to the three Magsaysay awardees.

Late Ramon Magsaysay was a former president of The Philippines. But
the award, though in his name and in his honour, is not an official
award of The Philippines government, but one that is funded and run by
the Rockefeller Foundation, out of Manila to be sure, with some local
faces accommodated on the Board. And its youth award (given to
Kejriwal) is funded by a bird of the same feather - the Ford
Foundation.

Cultivating and promoting 'society leaders' who one way or the other
stand up for American 'values' and help remove the social space for
those who challenge American hegemony that is at the root of a
multitude of world problems, is the long term purpose of the award. It
can also be used for short term goals, such as precipitating a
domestic crisis. [The current face-off at Ramlila Maidan could be said
to represent such a manufactured crisis].

Magsaysay is also given as reward to those who stand for American
interests. As an example, consider the invaluable collection of
India's rice germ-plasm assiduously built at the Rice Research
Institute, Cuttack, which was taken away by the International Rice
Research Institute (IRRI) located on the banks of the beautiful Laguna
lake about two hours drive from Manila.

The Rockefeller Foundation was instrumental in establishing the IRRI
for the western agri-business corporations, to have a firm grip on
rice cultivation in Asia. And the man who helped IRRI deprive India of
its precious rice germ-plasm collection was later made the head of
IRRI and rewarded with the Magsaysay [a rich purse], and subsequently
made chairman of the award committee.

The name Ramon Magsaysay did not come to the Ford Foundation by
accident. If it was to honour the values of freedom and commitment to
the people, they should have gone for the name of Jose Rizal, the most
revered Philipino leader, but they did not do that. Ramon Magsaysay
steadfastly stood for American interests both in The Philippines and
the southeast Asia region. The 1953 presidential election that
Magsaysay won was entirely manipulated by the CIA to put him in that
position. Nick Cullather of Stanford University says in his book
Illusions of Influence: The Political Economy of United
States-Philippines Relations, 1942-1960, 'The US flagrantly intervened
in the 1953 election. The list of CIA dirty tricks, by one account,
included money laundering, arson, and blackmail, but ironically these
depredations fail to convey the scope of the interference. The
election was all about the United States'.

Magsaysay was considered a great asset by America in fighting
communist movements. He happily worked for America to set up the
dangerous SEATO (Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty) military
alliance, although it had hardly any takers within the region (only
the kingdom of Thailand and the vassal state of Pakistan).

America unsuccessfully used him to spoil the 1955 Bandung Conference
that led to the birth of the Non-Alignment Movement. He refused to go
Bandung (like his mentor John Dulles, the US Secretary of State) in
deference to American interests, but sent a representative who argued
for American interests, giving lone company to the US envoy there. I
wonder how many of our civil society groups and journalists who get
excited at the very mention of the Magsaysay Award know how Ramon had
attempted to malign the image of Jawaharlal Nehru (and NAM) by
describing the Non Aligned Movement as a springboard of communism,
because they were angered by Nehru's criticism of SEATO.

Ramon Magsaysay is honoured by the US for nothing but his 'courageous
stand against communism in the Far East'. And the Rockefeller and Ford
Foundations' award in his name is meant to promote that old purpose in
a sustained and discrete manner.

The three Magsaysay awardees, owning multiple well-funded NGOs, live
up to the expectations of the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations; and
now the US government has officially chipped in, though it is
simultaneously trying to distance itself belatedly in the face of a
strong official reaction from New Delhi.

Where do we, the real people of India, the owners of the Republic and
the authors of the Constitution, stand, thrown as we are between a US
bent, colonialism's apologist Manmohan Singh and the Three Magsaysay
musketeers?

God, if there is one, save the country.
