Word For The Day
Thursday/ August 25 2011
Acts 8:36-38, NIV: "As they traveled along the road, they came to some
water and the eunuch said, 'Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be
baptized?'…And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip
and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him."
In obedience to the Lord, Philip began to walk the desert road, not
knowing where God was taking him. Soon into his journey, the reason
became clear. Philip met an Ethiopian official with whom he would
share the life changing message of God's grace and salvation in Christ
Jesus. Upon receiving the message, and seeing some water, the
Ethiopian saw no reason to wait to be baptized--to be immersed in
water--immersed in Christ.
All around us every day are things we can immerse ourselves into. We
can immerse ourselves in the things of this world, or we can immerse
ourselves in the things of God. Imagine walking through your home and
seeing your Bible sitting on a shelf. Imagine saying, "Look, here is
'water.' Why shouldn't I…" The wellspring of God's Word is life
giving, life changing nourishment for our souls. But it is difficult
to never thirst if we barely moisten our lips, and hard to be cleansed
if we simply splash a little in our faces. Jesus said, "…whoever
drinks the water I give him will never thirst" (Jn. 4:14). As we walk
this life's road, we may face some desert times, but we do not have to
thirst. And since we have available to us the life water that is of
Christ, why simply drink some…when we can be completely immersed
within it?
