published by the Hastings Center shows couples are willing to pay more for
eggs from donors who attend top ranked colleges. All things being the same,
when a university has a higher average SAT score, its students are offered
more for their eggs. For every increase of 100 points on the SAT, the rate
of compensation increased by $2350. Aaron D. Levine of Georgia Tech, study
author, examined 105 ads for egg donors published in the newspapers of 63
colleges and saw that nearly half of these requests exceeded the recommended
levels of compensation. We may be years from the birth of designer babies,
but these trends show that couples with the means are already willing to pay
more in the hopes of getting a child with smarter genes. The world is still
trying to determine how to consider and regulate the donation of parts of
your body. Private organ sales, and organ trafficking, are hotly contested,
and nations are trying to tightly control such trade. Blood samples, on the
other hand, are taken, stored, and exchanged like baseball cards...

Philip Pullman's new novel The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ is
opening another chapter in the often acrimonious debate between religious
believers and atheists. This is not, of course, a new argument, but it is
one that was given new life by the religious justifications offered by the
September 11 terrorists, and there is little sign of it abating. Although
Pullman's attack is more on organised Christianity than faith, the aim of
other strident atheists, such as Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens or
Daniel Dennett, is to use the hammer of science and rationality to break the
chains of religious superstition. Indeed, since the Ancient World,
intellectuals have predicted that faith would wither away in the face of
expanding human knowledge. But the prediction was wrong. Demographic trends
suggest that the proportion of the world's population who follow a major
religion will rise to about 80 per cent over the coming decades. Even in
countries with low religious observance – such as Britain – there has been
no decline in the number who say they believe in God.

A combination of simple bio-acoustic sensors and some sophisticated machine
learning makes it possible for people to use their fingers or forearms —
potentially, any part of their bodies — as touchpads to control smart phones
or other mobile devices. The technology, called Skinput, was developed by
Chris Harrison, a third-year Ph.D. student in Carnegie Mellon University's
Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII), along with Desney Tan and Dan
Morris of Microsoft Research. Harrison will describe the technology in a
paper to be presented on at CHI 2010, the Association for Computing
Machinery's annual Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in
Atlanta, Ga. Skinput could help people take better advantage of the
tremendous computing power now available in compact devices that can be
easily worn or carried. The diminutive size that makes smart phones, MP3
players and other devices so portable, however, also severely limits the
size and utility of the keypads, touchscreens and jog wheels typically used
to control them. "With Skinput, we can use our own skin — the body's largest
organ — as an input device," Harrison said "It's kind of crazy to think we
could summon interfaces onto our bodies, but it turns out to make a lot of

Scientists yesterday called for a ban on a gender-bending chemical found in
baby bottles and food containers. They said clear evidence from four studies
linked bisphenol A to cancer, birth defects and heart disease. Last week
Denmark became the first EU country to ban the chemical in food and drink
containers for the under threes. Some scientists believe bisphenol A, or
BPA, interferes with the hormonal system by copying oestrogen. Although some
animal studies have shown it to be safe, others have linked it to diseases
such as breast cancer, liver damage, obesity, diabetes and infertility. It
emerged earlier this month that Boots and Mothercare are still selling baby
bottles manufactured using BPA. And, despite the concerns, the Food
Standards Agency insists there is no evidence that the chemical harms
humans. Used to make shatterproof plastic, BPA is found in baby bottles, CD
cases, spectacle lenses, cutlery, sports gear and the resins that line food
and drink cans. Yesterday, eight scientists from Britain, the U.S. and Italy
jointly called for a ban.

The Obama administration in recent weeks has stepped up its monitoring of
Jewish construction projects in eastern Jerusalem and is protesting to the
highest levels of the Israeli government even small building or improvement
projects, WND has learned. Obama is calling for Israel to halt all Jewish
construction in eastern Jerusalem for four months as a confidence-building
gesture to start talks with the Palestinian Authority. Already, Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu placed a freeze on building projects in the
strategic West Bank, purportedly as a confidence-building gesture as well.
WND previously reported Obama's Middle East envoy, George Mitchell, oversaw
the establishment of an enhanced apparatus based in the U.S. consulate in
Jerusalem that closely monitors Judea and Samaria – and also known as the
West Bank – and eastern Jerusalem neighborhoods, incorporating regular tours
of the areas. According to both Israeli and PA sources, the consulate
apparatus has stepped up its monitoring of Jewish housing in eastern
Jerusalem. The Israeli sources said the U.S. government is protesting to
Netanyahu's office any sign of Jewish building, such as the sight of a
bulldozer in Maale Adumim, an eastern Jerusalem Jewish neighborhood.

In an unprecedented move, the U.S. has been conducting negotiations with
Israel on behalf of the Palestinian Authority, according to a senior PA
negotiator and sources in the Israeli government. The U.S. has been calling
for the resumption of indirect talks, with Obama administration officials
publicly proposing to serve as a go-between to facilitate dialogue between
Israel and the PA. Sources in both the PA and Israeli government told WND
talks are underway on a number of issues, including future borders and
security controls for a Palestinian state. A senior PA negotiator, speaking
on condition of anonymity, said rather than act as an intermediary, the U.S.
has been negotiating with Israel on behalf of the PA, assuming all
Palestinian positions and bargaining with Israel from the Palestinian side.
The account was confirmed with sources in the Israeli government, who said
such behavior by the U.S. government is unprecedented.

A California lawyer who has led several of the high-profile legal
challenges to Barack Obama's eligibility to be president has filed a motion
to intervene in a case by 13 attorneys general contesting the
constitutionality of the Democrats' massive health-care plan.
Attorney Orly Taitz – now a candidate for secretary of state in California –
is seeking to link her case and the case against the health-care law,
Florida et al vs. United States Department of Health and Human Services.
In legal documents filed April 6 in U.S. District Court for the Northern
District of Florida, Taitz requests an oral argument on the motion to take
place April 14 at 9 a.m.
As WND recently

Taitz argues, "H.R. 3590 was signed into law by Mr. Barack Hussein Obama,
who … never proved his legitimacy to the presidency. Therefore the act is
invalid, as it was not signed by one legally entitled to sign it."
Plaintiffs for the case include attorneys general representing the following
states: Florida, South Carolina, Nebraska, Texas, Utah, Louisiana, Alabama,
Michigan, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Washington, Idaho and South Carolina.
Virginia has filed an independent suit in a separate action. The complaint
lists Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, Treasury
Secretary Timothy Geithner and Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis as defendants.
The plaintiffs are asking the court to:
A. Declare the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to be in violation
of Article I of and the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United
States;
B. Declare defendants to have violated the plaintiffs' rights as sovereigns
and protectors of the freedom, health, and welfare of their citizens and
residents, as aforesaid;
C. Enjoin defendants and any other agency or employee acting on behalf of
the United States from enforcing the act against the plaintiffs, their
citizens and residents, and any of their agencies or officials or employees,
and to take such actions as are necessary and proper to remedy their
violations deriving from any such actual or attempted enforcement
"Movant unlike the Attorneys General is a medical provider directly affected
by the Act suing Quo Warranto," Taitz' motion states. "Accordingly, there
can be no genuine dispute that Dr. Taitz claims a valid interest in the
subject matter of the instant action – i.e. whether the Patient Protection
and Affordable Care Act violates the Commerce Clause."
It continues, "It is likewise irrefutable that Dr. Taitz is presently 'so
situated' that a disposition of the instant declaratory judgment action will
significantly, if not completely, impair her legal interests."
Taitz' complaint notes that she is a California-licensed doctor of dental
surgery and claims the health-care law "imposes an unreasonable infringement
upon her gainful employment in dental surgery as overburdening interstate
commerce in clear violation of the Commerce Clause."
"However," it states, "unlike the attorneys general, Dr. Taitz raises a more
fundamental issue, the underlying legitimacy of Barack Obama to sign the
act."

WND has reported on dozens of legal challenges to Obama's status as a
"natural born citizen." The Constitution, Article 2, Section 1, states, "No
Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at
the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the
Office of President."
Some of the lawsuits question whether he was actually born in Hawaii, as he
insists. If he was born out of the country, Obama's American mother, the
suits contend, was too young at the time of his birth to confer American
citizenship to her son under the law at the time.

Other challenges have focused on Obama's citizenship through his father, a
Kenyan subject to the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom at the time of his
birth, thus making him a dual citizen. The cases contend the framers of the
Constitution excluded dual citizens from qualifying as natural born. And
still others contend he holds Indonesian citizenship from his childhood
living there.
Adding fuel to the fire is Obama's persistent refusal to release documents
that could provide answers and the appointment – at a cost confirmed to be
at least $1.7 million – of myriad lawyers to defend against all requests for
his documentation. While his supporters cite an online version of a
"Certification of Live Birth" from Hawaii as his birth verification, critics
point out such documents actually were issued for children not born in the
state.

records, any baptism records and his adoption records.
Because of the dearth of information about Obama's eligibility, WND founder

The "certification of live birth" posted online and widely touted as
"Obama's birth certificate" does not in any way prove he was born in Hawaii,
since the same "short-form" document is easily obtainable for children not
born in Hawaii. The true "long-form" birth certificate – which includes
information such as the name of the birth hospital and attending physician –
is the only document that can prove Obama was born in Hawaii, but to date he
has not permitted its release for public or press scrutiny.
Oddly, though congressional hearings were held to determine whether Sen.
John McCain was constitutionally eligible to be president as a "natural born
citizen," no controlling legal authority ever sought to verify Obama's claim
to a Hawaiian birth.
