Respected devotees,
Please accept our humble obeisance - dandavat praṇāma,

In continuation of our previous article on Chanting Hare Krishna Mahaa
Mantra, we are presenting various methods of Chanting as mentioned in the
scriptures.

Japa Variety :

The Naama-aachaarya Haridaasa Thaakura chanted a daily quota of 300,000 holy
names (192 rounds) without fail. He chanted sixty-four rounds silently in
the mind; sixty-four rounds softly murmering; and sixty-four rounds in a
resounding voice. Hari-bhakti-vilasa describes three bonafide ways to chant
the Hare Krsna mahaa-man-tra:

1. Maanasika-Chanting in the mind without any external sound.

2. Upamsu-Soft chanting that can only be heard by the
saadhaka<https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWqNg9C6uTW7xH7jYhvOB5rRhsHOHUQgTAT29N3TMmYEC9PLfj4TefXl0hTaYRLXiA6ls41OUGfTNCBnY1QBkMAlmRj1Em7IaeW51ggRKQlpqNNuD-X6IkKXybTKoeuFpp_iqfe2YiWsM/s1600-h/sp+sitting+on+vyasasan+with+beads+scaled.jpg>Srila
Prabhupada, who generally
chanted japa this way, explains the benefits of upamsujapa: "At the present
moment the mind is always disturbed, full of anxieties. You cannot
concentrate. When you chant loudly, at least you hear "Krsna." Your mind is
immediately turned to Krsna. Immediately you associate with Krsna,
forcibly." (SPT 11/10/68)

3. Vaachika-Loud chanting that all can hear, as in kirtana, is a hundred
times more beneficial than upamsu japa. The Chaitanya-Bhaagavata tells how
the caste brahmanas once challenged Haridasa to prove which scripture
sanctioned his loud chanting. Haridasa Thakura replied, "Nowhere in the
scriptures is loud chanting of the holy name condemned. In fact, the
Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.34.17 says: yan-nama grhnann akhildn srotfn atmanam eva
ca sadyah pundti kim bhuyas, 'O Acyuta, anyone who chants Your name
purifies himself along with all who hear his chanting.' In Naradiya Purana,
Prahlada Maharaja says, 'Compared to the person who is attached to chanting
silently, the person who loudly chants the holy name of Hari is one hundred
times better. A silent chanter liberates only himself, but one who chants
loudly liberates himself and any other living entity who hears him.' "
(ct>. ch. 17)

One may alternate between these three forms of chanting in order to improve
concentration, maintain taste, and cultivate attraction in japa. For
variety, try chanting four rounds of manasic-japa. With lips closed and
tongue pressed against the palate (to prevent movement), one should
"mentally pronounce" each word of the maha-mantra. To perform manasic
japa successfully,
which is not easy, one must focus all his attention on Krsna's holy names.
By doing this one becomes aware of how inattentive he can be while chanting
softly or loudly. For example, when one is chanting loudly he may be
"grinding out" the holy names at a feverish pitch, but the mind and heart
may be a million miles from Krsna. But loud chanting can be very beneficial,
especially when the mind slips into monotony or the ghosts of desire surface
from the depths. At times like this a brisk walk in the fresh air, and a
few loud "roof top rounds" will help revive one's interest and attention in
japa. All these forms of chanting please Krsna and purify the heart,
provided they are done with sincerity and devotion. With practice a sadhaka
can choose the chanting style that gives him the best results. Or one may
follow Haridasa Thakura's example of chanting japa in all three ways
(silent, soft, loud). In all devotional endeavors, however, a sadhaka
should always seek the guidance and blessings of his preceptor.

certainly these bad habits should be cut with the sharp blades of spiritual

Topic : Association

*Why are we unable to serve Krishna* ?

If one associates with those devotees who continually serve Krishna, then
his propensity to serve Krishna will also be awakened. Without the
association of Krishna's devotees, one cannot develop his own desire to
engage in the Lord's service. Service to Hari is not a joke. It is
dependent on the association and mercy of devotees. Simply by following in
the devotees' footsteps, one receives the good fortune to engage in the
Lord's service.

Subject: Bhakta Chokamela - A great Saint from Maharashtra
To:

Hare Krishna!!!!!

Pandarpur is glorified as the bazaar of Nama. The most favorite of the
presiding deity, Panduranga is Nama Kirtan. There have not been as many
bhaktas for any other deities as there have been for Panduranga. The icing
on the cake is the fact that these great devotee-saints have belonged to
different castes, creeds, races and sects - a standing example to show that
the Lord does not distinguish based on such mundane worldly classifications.

Today we take up the sketch of a Bhakta by name Chokamela... Read on...

Long ago, in the holy Kshetra of Pandarpur (in present day Maharashtra),
there lived a great devotee of Lord Sri Panduranga (who was none other than
Lord Sri Krishna himself) by name Chokamela. Sri Chokamela's hailed from a
slum and as was customary those days the inhabitants were not permitted to
enter the temple. Though Lord Panduranga saw no difference between his
devotees based on their birth, colour, race, wealth, region or religion, the
selfish world did! To the Lord, the only thing that mattered was the depth
of one's devotion.

The friends, relatives and neighbours of Chokamela led lives without any
values, orderliness or sense of direction. They ate whatever they wanted;
slept whenever/wherever they wished and were addicted to all sorts of bad
habits such as alcoholism. Like a beautiful lotus that blooms in a stinking
marsh, Chokamela though, led the life of a pure Vaishnava. He would wake
early in the morning, have a bath, wear Tulsi maala and Gopi chandan and
chant the divine names of the Lord. As he was not permitted to enter the
temple of Lord Sri Panduranga, he stood near the compound wall and sang the
divine names joyfully.

Constantly, he advised his kith and kin to mend their ways and about how it
was very easy to win the grace of God by simply chanting his Divine Names.
Though they all mocked at him in the beginning, gradually his purity and
goodwill won their hearts and they gave all their vices. Following his
example, all of them woke up early in the morning and accompanied him to the
temple where they all stood outside the compound wall chanting the lord's
glorious names. Lord Panduranga Himself relished every nama they chanted,
much more than the puja offered by the priests. Like Nandanar, the great
devotee of Lord Sri Shiva, Chokamela too, had transformed the entire slum.
They were all a group of pure-hearted bhagavatas now.

Naturally, this was not liked by the priests of the temple. Though Chokamela
and his group did not in any way interfere with the temple proceedings, the
priests hurled abuses at them and told them that they had no right to
worship to God. As is the nature of any Sadhu, Chokamela too, did not want
to argue with the priests or fight with them. He thought if that was the way
that Panduranga wanted it, he would stay at home and worship the Lord.

From that day onwards, Chokamela stopped going to the temple. He would stay
at home and meditate upon the Lord. He saw all the pujas in his mind's eye
itself. The experience was blissful.

Time came when Panduranga decided to enact his divine play. One night, after
the priests had completed the puja and locked the temple, Panduranga came to
Chokamela's humble abode. Chokamela's joy knew no bounds. He cried thinking
of the Lord's compassion and totally lost himself in the happiness.

The Lord told Chokamela that he would fulfill any wish of his. Chokamela
immediately replied "Lord! There can be no greater thing to wish for, than
your darshan. Now that you have blessed me with that, I beg of you to show
me your temple. I have never been inside even once in my lifetime"

In a flash, the Lord took him inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and
they talked with each other all night long. The conversation was so
fascinating that time flew away and it was morning already. The priests
opened the doors of the temple and were shocked to find Chokamela inside the
sanctum sanctorum. They cursed him and took him to the King. " This man who
hails from the slum has entered the temple. Your majesty should punish him
appropriately" they said. Chokamela replied "I did not go there on my own.
How could I have gone inside after the door was locked? The Lord himself
took me inside".

Nobody was willing to believe his words and they all alleged that he was a
magician. The king, without proper enquiry, punished him by banishing him
from Pandarpur. He ordered that Chokamela should not live inside Pandarpur
and that none from the town should have any contact with him. Chokamela
silently accepted this also as the will of God. He put up a hut on the
opposite banks of the river Chandrabhaga and continued with his life as
before. He and his wife would fast on Ekadasi day and on Dwadasi day, they
had the most special visitor one can ever wish for to have a meal at their
abode – the Lord himself. This became a routine affair.

On a particular Dwadasi day, Chokamela was seen beating and cursing his
wife. The priests from the temple who had come to the river witnessed that
scene and felt sorry for the poor woman. " You have lost all your respect
and commitment. Is this the way to serve the Lord? You have committed a
great sin by spilling curd on his robe, careless woman!" Chokamela screamed.

These words of Chokamela shocked the priest. They told each other "Oh! What
is he saying? He is saying that the Lord has come to take food in his place.
How can that be? He is definitely mocking at us. The punishment has not
taught him a lesson. He has become more arrogant! We should report him to
the king again'

Saying so, they went to the temple and opened the doors. What they witnessed
was the most unbelievable sight. The robes of the Lord were drenched in
curd. They could not believe their own eyes. "Chokamela was right after all.
Lord Panduranga had been to his place. Oh! What a blunder we have committed
by insulting and ill-treating a true Mahatma. Let us all go and seek his
pardon. Only then the Lord will accept us" they all said in one voice and
rushed to Sri Chokamela's hut. They all narrated the happenings and fell at
Chokamela's feet. Chokamela though, was embarrassed by this act of the
priests. He said with tears in his eyes 'Great Priests! I am just a humble
servant of Panduranga. Please do not fall at my feet. I am speck of dust"

The entire town and the king realized the greatness of Sri Chokamela and
hailed his bhakti. The Lord had once again enacted a divine play to make the
world understand true devotion.

Respected devotees,
Please accept our humble obeisance - dandavat praṇāma,

*Sri Chaitanya Mahaaprabhu is God Himself*

*
*

We also have attached herewith a presentation which has multiple evidences
from Shaastra about Lord Shri Krishna's appearance as Shri Chaitanya
Mahaaprabhu in Kaliyuga and His mission, His family, His form, His Name, His
birth place and much more.

**

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is Sri Krishna Himself, the Supreme Personality of
Godhead. He appeared in the Kali yuga (the present age), 513 years ago in
1486 AD, in the mood of His own greatest devotee, Srimati Radharani. The
fact that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is non different from Krishna is
substantiated by the scriptures such as the Srimad Bhagvatam (11.5.32), by
the saadhus (saintly persons) such as Srila Advaita acarya, Nityananda
prabhu and the six Goswamis of Vrindavan. Finally it is substantiated by all
the gurus in bona fide disciplic successions. Since it is independently
verified by the scriptures, sadhus and guru, we should also accept that
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is an incarnation of the Supreme Personality of
Godhead.
Sri Chaitanya Gives the Religion for this Age

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in this yuga to demonstrate the means for the
people to return to Godhead. In the present age of Kali, that began about
5000 years ago, people have short life spans, weak intellect and a
propensity to quarrel and cheat. Out of compassion for the fallen souls in
this age, Sri Krishna incarnated, as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, to establish the
process of Sankirtan Yajna to help people return back, back to Godhead.
Sankirtan is chanting the holy name of the Lord. It is the religion for this
age. It could be done congregationally, as kirtans, or it could be done
softly in solace, as japa. Japa is the process of chanting the maha-mantra:
(Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Raama, Hare
Raama, Raama Raama Hare Hare) on the 108 tulasi beads of the japa-mala. To
enact His mission, He appeared with His associates. Thus Sri Krishna
Chaitanya is often worshipped in His form as pancha-tattva, accompanied by
His immediate expansions, Nityananda prabhu, Advaita acarya, Gadadhar pandit
and Srivasa Thakur.
God´s Name and Himself are not Different

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu established that the name of Krishna is non different
from Krishna Himself. He established this on the basis of authorized
scriptures and explained to the mass of people the philosophy of
(achintya-bhedaabheda-tattva), which maintains that the Supreme Lord is
simultaneously one with and different from His creation. He demonstrated it
by practicing the chanting of the holy name Himself, and explained that the
holy name is the sound incarnation of the Lord Himself, and since the Lord
is absolute, there is no difference between His holy name and His
transcendental body.
His Appearance (Birth)

Krishna Chaitanya, as He is often also called was born in a brahman family
in Navadvipa, West Bengal as Vishvambhara, His birth was accompanied by an
almost universal chanting of the Holynames, since it coincided with a total
lunar eclipse. As a child, the only way His parents, Sacidevi and Jagannatha
Misra, could get Him to stop crying was by chanting the holy name.
Therefore, from the beginning, He was inducing the people to chant to names
of God. He was also called 'Gauraanga' on account of His golden body
complexion and 'Nimaai' partly because He was born under a neem tree.
Youth

Though He had no need for it, He followed the established practice of
studying scriptures under the guidance of a guru in a tol (school). As a
young boy, He acquired a formidable reputation as a logician and Vedaantist.
At a very young age, he defeated Kesava Kashmiri, a digvijaya
(unconquerable) brahman from Kashmir .
Krishna (God) Can Only Be Known By Serving Him with Love

But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu then moved on to immerse Himself completely in the
devotional worship of Krishna. He then conclusively established over and
over again to prominent Vedic scholars of His time, that Krishna can never
be approached by the dint of mental speculation, specially in the present
age where people have limited intellect, but can be only approached in the
mood of love and surrender - the mood of a devotee.
Know God by Chanting His Holy Name

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu also demonstrated that any one can become a devotee. He
glorified Haridas Thakur, a Moslem by birth, who daily chanted 300,000 names
of the Lord. In fact He showed that any living creature, may it be a learned
brahman, a fallen shudra, a criminal or even animals can become spiritually
elevated by chanting or hearing the names of Lord. He thus showed that love
of Godhead is an intrinsic quality of the spirit soul, and can be awakened
from its dormant stage by the process of chanting and kirtan.
Stages of Chanting God´s Names

As one practices the process of chanting, he passes through three stage: the
offensive stage, wherein one may desire all kinds of material happiness, the
clearing stage, when the material contamination's are cleared and finally
the transcendental stage, one of pure love of Godhead. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
taught and showed that this is the highest stage of perfection for the human
beings.
The Immediate Followers of Sri Chaitanya, the Six Goswamis

The immediate followers of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, chief amongst them being
the six Goswamis, wrote several authoritative books based on Vedic
scriptures. They wrote this based on the personal instructions given by
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to demonstrate that bhakti or love of Krishna is the
ultimate goal of the Vedas.
Official Biographies of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

Krsnadas Kaviraj Goswami and Vrndavan dasa Thakura wrote authoritative
biographies of Sri Krishna Chaitanya known as Chaitanya Charitamrita and
Chaitanya Bhaagvata.
His Teachings - The Sikshaastakam

Though He inspired His followers to prolific writing, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
left behind the essence of His teaching in only eight verses called the
(Sikshaastaka). Each of this verse is a pearl of spiritual wisdom, which if
understood properly, under the guidance of a qualified teacher, can elevate
a person from the mundane plane of materialism to the highest form of
devotion - prema bhakti. In addition to this, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu lived an
exemplary life that served as a model for people in the Kali yuga to follow
and return to Godhead.
He Predicts the Future of the World

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu predicted that the holy name of the Lord would be
spread to every village and town all over the world. He propagated the
chanting of the maha mantra which He directly took from the scriptures. In
the Brhan-naradiya Purana says: (harer nama harer nama harer namaivia
kevalam kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha) Chant the Holy
name, chant the Holy name, chant the Holy name. In the Kali yuga, there is
no other way, no other way, no other way!

The Kalisantarana Upanishad says that the 16 word, 32 syllables Hare Krishna
maha mantra is the most effective way of counteracting the contaminating
effects of the Kali yuga. Many of His empowered devotees, like Bhaktivinoda
Thakura, Bhaktisiddhantha Saraswati Thakura have since appeared to further
this holy mission. The latest, prominent personality in this line is His
Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of acarya of
ISKCON. In following the instructions of his spiritual master and the
mission of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Prabhupada propagated the chanting of the
name of Krishna well beyond the borders of India , in countries all over the
world, a mission that is still being carried forward.
Ecstatic Love (Prema Bhakti)

Ecstatic love or Prema Bhakti is the feeling one experiences when one
becomes self realized, i.e. one realizes that one is a spiritual being, an
eternal servant of God, Lord Krishna.

Ecstatic love is the highest spiritual experience one can have. It is beyond
all material happiness and it is described in the Vedic scriptures as
Aananda or bliss.

Bhagavad Gita 5.21 says: "the self realized person enjoy unlimited
happiness."

Ecstatic love can be achieved in this age by anyone, thanks to Sri Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu whose life exemplified one who is experiencing ecstatic love and
who gave the means of achieving ecstatic love. By regularly practicing
Bhakti Yoga in which the main activity is chanting the Maha Mantra:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare; Hare Raama, Hare
Raama, Raama Raama Hare Hare
