Where's the oil? Model suggests much may be gone

By CAIN BURDEAU (AP) – 12 hours ago

NEW ORLEANS — For a spill now nearly half the size of Exxon Valdez, the oil
from the Deepwater Horizon disaster is pretty hard to pin down.

Satellite images show most of an estimated 4.6 million gallons of oil has
pooled in a floating, shape-shifting blob off the Louisiana coast. Some has
reached shore as a thin sheen, and gooey bits have washed up as far away as
Alabama. But the spill is 23 days old since the Deepwater Horizon exploded
April 20 and killed 11 workers, and the thickest stuff hasn't shown up on
the coast.

So, where's the oil? Where's it going to end up?

Government scientists and others tracking the spill say much of the oil is
lurking just below the surface. But there seems to be no consensus on
whether it will arrive in black waves, mostly dissipate into the massive
Gulf or gradually settle to the ocean floor, where it could seep into the
ecosystem for years.

When it comes to deepwater spills, even top experts rely on some guesswork.

One of their tools, a program the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration uses to predict how oil spills on the surface of water may
behave, suggests that more than a third of the oil may already be out of the
water.

About 35 percent of a spill the size of the one in the Gulf, consisting of
the same light Louisiana crude, released in weather conditions and water
temperatures similar to those found in the Gulf now would simply evaporate,
according to data that The Associated Press entered into the program.

The model also suggests that virtually all of the benzene — a highly toxic
flammable organic chemical compound and one of the chief ingredients in oil
— would be stripped off and quickly vaporize.

The model was not designed for deepwater spills like the one at the Macondo
well in the Mississippi Canyon now threatening the Gulf Coast. But experts
said the analysis might give a close approximation of what is most likely
happening where the oil plume is hitting the surface nearly 50 miles south
of Louisiana.

The size and nature of the spill also has been altered by response efforts.
So far, about 436,000 gallons of chemicals have been sprayed on the oil to
break it up into smaller droplets and about 4 million gallons of oily water
have been recovered.

Of that recovered mixture, at least 10 percent is oil, BP and NOAA said.
Smaller amounts of oil also have been collected after washing ashore, and
crews have burned a negligible quantity off the surface.

That would leave as much as 2.7 million gallons at sea as of Friday, with
about 210,000 gallons coming up from the well every day.

The 210,000 gallons figure — specifically, about 5,000 barrels — comes from
NOAA and has frequently been cited by BP PLC and the Coast Guard. Some
scientists have said based on an analysis of BP's video of the leak that the
flow rate is much higher, while others have concluded the video is too
grainy to draw any such conclusions.

Even with computer models and history as guides, uncertainty reigns.

Doug Helton, the operations coordinator for NOAA's Office of Response and
Restoration, said the agency was uncertain how much oil would sink to the
bottom. For now, most of it is near the surface.

"This oil is coming from the sea floor and coming up to the surface in
droplets and then once it comes to the surface it re-coelesces as a slick,"
he said.

Ed Overton, a Louisiana State University chemist who's analyzed the spill
for NOAA, said he thinks most of the oil is within a foot of the surface.

"Ultimately, you could have a lot of oil on the shoreline. It won't be a
black tide coming in, it will be globs coming ashore," he said.

"It's going to be a long, slow summer."

Wilma Subra, a chemist and MacArthur Fellow affiliated with the Louisiana
Environmental Action Network, said there was a risk that the effort to break
up the oil with dispersants would simply sweep it to the ocean bottom and
contaminate the food chain, a possibility that has shrimpers on edge.

Merv Fingas, who has studied oil spills for 35 years and has worked for
Environment Canada, that nation's environmental agency, predicted a bit of
both: some would wash up, and some would stick to sediment and mud and sink
slowly to the bottom, much of it likely settling near the spewing well.

"That's the fate of a lot of oil spills: sedimentation on the bottom,"
Fingas said.

Overton disagreed, saying the oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill is too
light to sink all the way.

A common refrain among experts and officials is that every oil spill is
unique.

Larry McKinney, director of the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico
Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, said the Deepwater Horizon
spill reminds him of the last catastrophic oil flood in the Gulf.

In 1979, Mexico's Ixtoc I in the western Gulf blew out and spewed about
420,000 gallons of oil a day for nine months. Large quantities of oil did
not reach Texas beaches.

"This was a problem we ran into with Ixtoc, we never found the oil,"
McKinney said. "But I think even today if you dig down in some sandy beaches
you can find a layer of Ixtoc oil."

<http://twitter.com/cosmos4u/status/13746391108>about a
blog entry by Astro Bob <http://www.areavoices.com/astrobob/?blog=78068> I
learned of something which should be obvious to anyone who has trained even
a rather small telescope on Jupiter over the past few weeks: one of its
iconic stripes is just plain gone.

*Jupiter loses a belt*
Over a period of a year, one of Jupiter's two main dark belts -- the dark
stripes most visible in amateur telescopes -- has faded completely away. The
South Equatorial Belt (SEB) is gone, leaving just the north belt (NEB)
viewable in small telescopes. Credit: Anthony Wesley
Astro Bob explains in more
detail<http://www.areavoices.com/astrobob/?blog=78068>,
remarking: "Jupiter with only one belt is almost like seeing Saturn when its
rings are edge-on and invisible for a time -- it just doesn't look right."
But, apparently, this is an event that happens rather more frequently than
the Saturnian equinox, once every 3 to 15 years.

The photos above are from Anthony Wesley, the same guy who discovered
the impact
scar on Jupiter <http://planetary.org/blog/article/00002049/> last year; but
you don't need to be as fabulous an astrophotographer as Wesley to see this
for yourself. You do, however, need to get up early; Star Walk (my iPhone
astronomy app of choice) tells me Jupiter rises around 3:30 a.m. right now.
If you don't feel like getting up early, just check out Wesley's

Jupiter.

A JESUS CHRIST CARTOON SHOW

Comedy Central developing Jesus Christ cartoon [Excerpts]

Comedy Central might censor every image of the Prophet Muhammad on "South
Park," yet the network is developing a whole animated series around Jesus
Christ.

As part of the network's upfront presentation to advertisers, the network is
set to announce "JC," a half-hour show about Christ wanting to escape the
shadow of his "powerful but apathetic father" and live a regular life in New
York City.

In the show, God is preoccupied with playing video games while Christ, "the
ultimate fish out of water," tries to adjust to life in the big city.

When asked if the show might draw some fire, especially coming on the heels
of the network's decision to censor the Muslim faith's religious figure on
"South Park," [head of original programming Kent Alterman] said it's too
early in the show's development to be concerned about such matters.

"We don't even know what the show is yet," he said.

[TBC: Jesus said, "And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer
also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy
coat also" (Luke 6:29). Islam, as it has often demonstrated, is quite
prepared to issue death threats that show every potential of being followed
through. Consequently, Alterman and his cronies understandably would direct
their alleged comedy against a target that will not shoot back.]

This week on 'The Hal Lindsey Report'
On this week's edition of "The Hal Lindsey Report": Senior citizens who dine
at the Ed Young Senior Citizens Center in Port Wentworth, Georgia, recently
got a taste of something they didn't like with their meal. It was the bitter
aftertaste of government intervention. Seniors who purchase meals at the
center were told that they could no longer offer verbal prayers of
thanksgiving or say grace aloud before their meals. Why? Because those meals
are federally subsidized. (You know. That whole "separation of church and
state" ploy.)

Even though that order was reversed after this week's show was produced,
there are still some powerful lessons to be learned in this episode. I
wonder what will happen when the federal government becomes the 'single
payer' of our healthcare? I don't know about you, but prayer is a vital part
of any visit I make to the doctor!

The Left just loves to trot out their misinterpretation of the "wall of
separation" anytime anyone mentions God or Jesus. They claim the utterance
of those words by anyone remotely connected with any sort of political
governing body in the United States constitutes an establishment of
religion, which is prohibited by the First Amendment to the Constitution.
However, no one complains when it seems that each and every government
official who has occupied office since 9/11 loudly and repeatedly proclaims
that "Islam is a religion of peace and love." That sounds to me like a
theological judgment. How is that NOT an "establishment of religion?" Oh, I
see. The "separation clause" applies only to Christianity. I guess it takes
a Liberal lawyer or a sitting judge to see it. You know, they're the ones
who tell us that just because we don't see it in the Constitution doesn't
mean it's not there!

It's often said that you can tell a lot about a man by looking at his
enemies. Ever wonder what it is about Jesus Christ that makes so many go
berserk? I'll tell you.

Last weekend, President Obama spoke to the graduating class at Hampton
University in Hampton, Virginia. The man who made the internet a cornerstone
of his campaign, tweeted (or twitted?) constantly to hundreds of thousands,
if not millions of young fans, and used Facebook and other social media to
great advantage, told the graduates that they were facing a new world in
which they would be bombarded by too much unfiltered information. Further,
the man who won election on the promise of 'change', told them that,
unfortunately, the breathtaking change caused by this overload of
information couldn't be stopped.

His speech seemed to imply that being exposed to all kinds of arguments is a
BAD thing. That it might even threaten democracy. It's a far cry from the
time Americans treasured a 'multiplicity of voices.' That expansive variety
of thought and expression guaranteed that somehow, some way, the truth would
be heard. Apparently, that's not what the Obama administration has in mind.
In fact, in the financial reform bill, they're seeking to put control of the
internet in the hands of the Federal Trade Commission. Think about the
almost total control of every aspect of our lives the government has gained
through the misapplication of interstate commerce laws! That's a chilling
thought. Of course, that's what it's all about.

A few of you have e-mailed to complain that I'm too political on the
program. Some say that I should be loving people into the Kingdom of God
(and I don't argue with that), rather than warning our nation about what I
see looming on the horizon. A couple have told me that I should be
supportive of the leadership in our country and trust God to make them see
the errors in their thinking. (Imagine saying that to the ancient prophets!
They declared the errors directly to the leaders themselves!) Well, this
week, I'll explain to you why I continue to sound the alarm about the
dangers inherent in the direction this administration is leading our nation,
not only in our relationship with Israel, but on many moral, cultural, and
spiritual issues. And I'll tell you why I think God expects more from
Christian citizens than ordinary ones.

Don't miss this week's 'Report' on TBN, Daystar, CPM Network, Inspiration,
various local stations, www.hallindsey.com or www.hischannel.co m. Check
your local listings.

God Bless,

Hal Lindsey
