MONDAY 22ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

FIRST CORINTHIANS 2:1-5
Now when I came to you, brothers, I did not come with any brilliance
of oratory or wise argument to announce to you the mystery of God. I
was resolved that the only knowledge I would have while I was with you
was knowledge of Jesus, and of him as the crucified Christ. I came
among you in weakness, in fear and great trembling and what I spoke
and proclaimed was not meant to convince by philosophical argument,
but to demonstrate the convincing power of the Spirit, so that your
faith should depend not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

LUKE 4:16-30
He came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the
synagogue on the Sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up to read,
and they handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the
scroll he found the place where it is written: The spirit of the Lord
is on me, for he has anointed me to bring the good news to the
afflicted. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives, sight to
the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim a year of favour
from the Lord. He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the
assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on
him. Then he began to speak to them, 'This text is being fulfilled
today even while you are listening.' And he won the approval of all,
and they were astonished by the gracious words that came from his
lips. They said, 'This is Joseph's son, surely?' But he replied, 'No
doubt you will quote me the saying, "Physician, heal yourself," and
tell me, "We have heard all that happened in Capernaum, do the same
here in your own country." ' And he went on, 'In truth I tell you, no
prophet is ever accepted in his own country. 'There were many widows
in Israel, I can assure you, in Elijah's day, when heaven remained
shut for three years and six months and a great famine raged
throughout the land, but Elijah was not sent to any one of these: he
was sent to a widow at Zarephath, a town in Sidonia. And in the
prophet Elisha's time there were many suffering from virulent skin-
diseases in Israel, but none of these was cured -- only Naaman the
Syrian.' When they heard this everyone in the synagogue was enraged.
They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of the town; and they
took him up to the brow of the hill their town was built on, intending
to throw him off the cliff, but he passed straight through the crowd
and walked away.

REFLECTION
It is really a mystery why some people listen to Jesus and accept his
message while others do not. Often those who do not are those who are
preoccupied with mundane tasks, jobs, hobbies, money, in short,
earthly things. On the other hand, those who have gone through
suffering or have searched for answers from God are those who listen
to Jesus. Those who feel that they do not need a savior will not
listen; they are already self-sufficient. But those who are `poor in
spirit', those who have experienced emptiness and nothingness but yet
believe that God is good and that He has a purpose for our lives are
more ready to accept his words.

In the time of Jesus, the Anawim or the `poor of Yahweh' were the
little ones, the downtrodden, the outcasts, the marginalized of
society and those oppressed by others. They received the message of
Jesus and acclaimed him as their Messiah. Others who were known public
sinners but received the grace of forgiveness also welcomed the Lord's
message. Lastly, the devout ones who waited for the Messiah with
longing, were rewarded when Jesus came and revealed to them that he
was the long-awaited Son of David.

NINETEEN SOMETHINGS TO SAY TO CHILDREN

1. I love you! There is nothing that will make me stop loving you.
Nothing you could do or say or think will ever change that.

2. You are amazing! I look at you with wonder! Not just at what you
can do, but who you are. There is no one like you. No one!

3. It's all right to cry. People cry for all kinds of reasons: when
they are hurt, sad, glad, or worried; when they are angry, afraid, or
lonely. Big people cry too. I do.

4. You've made a mistake. That was wrong. People make mistakes. I do.
Is it something we can fix? What can we do? It's all over. You can
start fresh. I know you are sorry. I forgive you.

5. You did the right thing. That was scary or hard. Even though it
wasn't easy, you did it. I am proud of you; you should be too.

6. I'm sorry. Forgive me. I made a mistake.

7. You can change your mind. It's good to decide, but it is also fine
to change.

8. What a great idea! You were really thinking! How did you come up

SPIRITUAL ANARCHY -- Judges 17:6 NIV

In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.

When I read those words, they gave me an uncomfortably familiar sensation.
It's so very similar to the prevailing attitude today in the United States.
Even though we have a President. even though we have a government. even
though we have a Constitution. the attitude today is, "do your own thing".
"Look out for number one." "Assert yourself." "I can do whatever I want as
long as I don't hurt anybody else."

It goes back to the old saying, "If God had intended to be lenient, He would
have given us the Ten Suggestions." God has given us standards to live by,
but you and I can't even live up to the ten simplest ones. Do you know
anyone who can get through one twenty-four hour period without breaking at
least one of the Ten Commandments? Remember, our "black and white"
understanding of the Ten Commandments falls far short of what God meant when
He gave them to Moses. Jesus outlines some of them in His Sermon on the
Mount in Matthew

For instance, most people would say that they have never committed adultery.
ever. But, look at what Jesus says in Matthew 5:27-28, "You have heard that
it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks
at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
That puts a whole different light on the subject, doesn't it? It's the same
with the other nine Commandments.

In fact, do you know anyone who can get through one week without breaking
the FIRST of the Ten Commandments? I don't. I don't know one soul who has
not - at one time or another - let someone or something come between him and
God. I know a few who - outwardly - come close. But if the truth were
known, even those who appear the most holy are not sinless. they fall short
of the glory of God just as miserably as the rest of us. They're just not
as obvious about it to those around them.

Right now, we are living in the midst of spiritual anarchy. In these days,
America may have a President, but as a nation, we have no King. The country
as a whole is filled with the prevailing attitude of every person doing
whatever he wants to. Just like in the days of Micah. And America isn't
the only country with this problem. We're just one of many.

No matter where we live, you and I can protect ourselves from being caught
up in this anarchy, but we can only do it by staying in the Word of God.
That is our source of truth, our source of guidance, our source of dialogue
with Jesus. We must commit to not only knowing what the Word says, but to
following what it says. We must commit to keeping the Word of God as our
standard. the goal we are striving for. the end we want to reach. If we
concentrate on doing that, we keep our eyes on Jesus, and we're protected
from the prevailing attitudes of the day.

Please pray for: A couple - he is in long term care...both are elderly
and each is having a very hard time with this change in their lives.
He cries a lot and she is feeling guilty even knowing that she
couldn\'t care for him at home. They are saved. Joann - elderly with a
number of health issues...the latest is swelling of her feet and legs.
She is saved. John is an elderly man who has taken a fall. He broke
three vertebrate and six ribs on one side and five ribs on the other
side. He is going into surgery today. He is a cancer survivor and
while taking x rays they found a mass in a lung. He is saved. Ruth is
an elderly lady who is very anxious about so many things. She is also
in the process of moving into a new apartment. She is saved. God

Dear Friends, My family and I are in dire need. I have 5 beautiful
daughters for which I am very grateful, and an amazing faithful wife
that I\'m struggling to support. I hope this does not sound trite as I
know there must be thousands in similar circumstances. however we
request prayer that the Lord would rescue us from financial ruin and
lead us into His purposes for our lives. Our business is on the brink
of bankruptcy and we now struggle to take care of even our most basic
needs. Is it possible to be blessed by the Maker of heaven and earth?

Lord, I am praying until September 1st, asking for financial graces,
mental healing, work and freedom from welfare. Lord Jesus, I am
desperate to get off of welfare and finding work, income and
sufficient finances so that I may care for my children. The strain and
emotional stress financial poverty on us all takes a toll on my mental
condition, and only worsens it. It has greatly, greatly affected me
and my children, and I beg you to intercede for me, and my children,
that we may find healing from this constant stress and be graced with
the ability to always eat, have our own home, get the health and help
we need, and be secure in our daily lives. Pray for us please, and
grace us with a quick answer to my prayer. Please. And Lord, today I
spent the absolute last of my money on McDonald\'s, I figured it gave
us a good amount of fat and food to carry us through the next week
until (should my prayer not be answered) I get more food stamps and
money on the 5th from welfare. We haven\'t eaten well the last week,
we only eat roughly one & a half meals a day the last week, and we are
recovering from a cold and sinus infection that has taken a LOT out of
me, I am lethargic and sickly feeling. Help me please Lord, help my
children. Grace us with this request, grace me with healing, guidance,
direction and work, grace us with financial means to feed ourselves,
have our own home, and live comfortably with health care, doctors,
medicine, food, shelter and clothing..and maybe more for fun. Lord,
please answer my prayer, and please hear me today-so that tomorrow we
may have more food. Milk, bread, peanut butter, ground beef, breakfast
food and the likes. Please Lord. Please. Amen

The area where I live is so needy for Christ to be in their lives.
There are churches around here but no outreach to others. Am asking
God to send someone to this country area in Ulster, Pa.Another area is
Elmira , NY, Southside. Badly infested with drugs. Spoke with one who
works in the area, they shared how dangerous it is & I suggested she
pray in a church to fit the bill.Someone to \"Go in Jesus Name.\"I
would if I could, believe that, since thats not probable, let God do
what He will. He will get the job done, if there is one open heart to
listen of God\"s love for them. Praise Him who is able!

This is Woman's month and we therefore treat ourselves with some "me"
time. We recall that we should celebrate our femininity. We are
different to men and do not long to be the same or to be treat the
same. This is what makes us unique. This is how God created us and
this is what we want to celebrate.
I came across Ezekiel 16 where the Ezekiel describes in feminine terms
what the Lord has done to Jerusalem. He chooses to make it plain in
terms that a woman can relate to. Ezekiel says that in sin we
struggled and were kicking in our blood. When we were saved the Lord
said to us "Live". He gave us life and with that life we grew like
plants. We grew in all areas in our lives- in our family life; work
life; spiritually and financially. The Lord sees us like He sees
Jerusalem "the most beautiful jewel". The Lord saw our nakedness and
dresses us. He dresses us with "an embroidered dress, shoes on our
feet and bracelets on our arms. " The Lord put a beautiful crown on
our head. We wear our family, husband and kids like the crown that
the Lord crowned Jerusalem with. We wear them with pride. We build our
home and our workplace with pride. The next time we clothe ourselves
we are remind that the Lord wants to clothe us in splendor and beauty
that is fit for a queen.
Prayer: Lord, as women we thank you for clothing us in splendor with
fine linen. We carry ourselves as the queens that you have intended us
to be. We declare you grace over our homes, workplace and family.

Reacting to criticism

So often we are immobilized by the slightest criticism. We treat it like
an emergency, and defend ourselves as if we were in a battle.

When we react to criticism with a knee-jerk, defensive response, it
hurts. We feel attacked, and we have a need to defend or to offer a
counter criticism. We fill our minds with angry or hurtful thoughts
directed at ourselves or at the person who is being critical. All this
reaction takes an enormous amount of mental energy.

An incredibly useful exercise is to agree with criticism directed toward
you. I'm not talking about turning into a doormat or ruining your
self-esteem by believing all negativity that comes in your direction.
There are many times when simply agreeing with criticism defuses the
situation, satisfies a person's need to express a point of view, offers
you a chance to learn something about yourself by seeing a grain of
truth in another position, and, perhaps most important, provides you an
opportunity to remain calm.

One of the first times I consciously agreed with criticism directed
toward me was many years ago when a devotee said to me, "Sometimes you
talk too much." I remember feeling momentarily hurt before deciding to
agree. I responded by saying, "You're right, I do talk too much
sometimes." In agreeing with him, I was able to see that he had a good
point. I often do talk too much! What's more, my non-defensive reaction
helped him to relax.

Reacting to criticism never makes the criticism go away. In fact,
negative reactions to criticism often convince the person doing the
criticizing that they are accurate in their assessment of you.
