Three Little Words

There are many things that we can do to perk up and strengthen our
interpersonal relationships. Yet the most effective involves the saying of
just three words. When spoken or conveyed, these statements have the power
to forge new friendships, deepen old ones and restore relationships that
have cooled. The following three-word phrases can enrich every relationship.

I'LL BE THERE:
If you have ever had to call a friend in the middle of the night, to take a
sick child to hospital, or when your car has broken down some miles from
home, you will know how good it feels to hear the phrase "I'll be there."
Being there for another person is the greatest gift we can give. When we are
truly present for other people, important things happen to them and us. We
are renewed in love and friendship. We are restored emotionally and
spiritually. Being there is at the very core of civility.

I MISS YOU:
Perhaps more marriages could be saved and strengthened if couples simply and
sincerely said to each other "I miss you." This powerful affirmation tells
partners they are wanted, needed, desired and loved. Consider how ecstatic
you would feel, if you received an unexpected phone call from your spouse in
the middle of your workday, just to say "I miss you."

I RESPECT YOU:
Respect is another way of showing love. Respect conveys the feeling that
another person is a true equal. If you talk to your children as if they were
adults you will strengthen the bonds and become close friends. This applies
to all interpersonal relationships.

MAYBE YOU`RE RIGHT:
This phrase is highly effective in diffusing an argument and restoring
frayed emotions. The flip side to "maybe your right" is the humility of
admitting, "Maybe I'm wrong". Let's face it. When you have a heated argument
with someone, all you do is cement the other person's point of view. They,
or you, will not change their stance and you run the risk of seriously
damaging the relationship between you. Saying "maybe you're right" can open
the door to further explore the subject, in which you may then have the
opportunity to get your view across in a more rational manner.

PLEASE FORGIVE ME:
Many broken relationships could be restored and healed if people would admit
their mistakes and ask for forgiveness. All of us are vulnerable to faults,
foibles and failures. A man should never be ashamed to own up that he has
been in the wrong, which is saying, in other words, that he is wiser today
than he was yesterday.

I THANK YOU:
Gratitude is an exquisite form of courtesy. People who enjoy the
companionship of good, close friends are those who don't take daily
courtesies for granted. They are quick to thank their friends for their many
expressions of kindness. On the other hand, people whose circle of friends
is severely constricted often do not have the attitude of gratitude.

COUNT ON ME:
A friend is one who walks in when others walk out. Loyalty is an essential
ingredient for true friendship; it is the emotional glue that bonds people.
Those that are rich in their relationships tend to be steady and true
friends. When troubles come, a good friend is there indicating you can
"count on me."

LET ME HELP:
The best of friends see a need and try to fill it. When they spot a hurt
they do what they can to heal it. Without being asked, they pitch in and
help.

I UNDERSTAND YOU:
People become closer and enjoy each other more if they feel the other person
accepts and understands them. Letting your spouse know in so many little
ways that you understand them, is one of the most powerful tools for healing
your relationship. This applies to any relationship.

I LOVE YOU:
Perhaps the most important three words that you can say. Telling someone
that you truly love them satisfies a person's deepest emotional needs the
need to belong, to feel appreciated and to be wanted. Your family, your
friends and you, all need to hear those three little words. "I love you."

BEWARE OF STAYING THERE TOO LONG

We need to be aware of a
Danger in the acceptance process.
And the danger is creating
Our own soap operas.

It is simply not healthy to
Review our own sad stories again
And again -- like replaying a very
Sad day on one of the soaps.

When we dwell too long on the
"sad things" we relinquish to them a power
They were never meant to have:
The power to keep our mental controls
On the same channel in our minds.

I have learned that I don't
Want to give that kind of power to
Things I have no control over.

Instead, I need to remind
Myself that I can choose happiness.

IT'S NOT EASY!

Deciding to move forward and choosing
Happiness over sorrow is a tough choice.
Sometimes I feel as though I'm fighting
An uphill battle -- and you will too!
At times we may feel that the dark
Clouds may never give way to the sunshine.

It is at those very moments that
We have to remind ourselves of
The power we do possess.

It is the power of choice.

I have discovered that somewhere
In the midst of whatever chaos
May surround us we can...

Choose happiness over despair,
Hope over hopelessness,
Joy over continual sadness,
And a smile over a frown.

SO HAVE AT IT!

Practice making this choice by
Doing things that make you
Smile, as well as bring joy to others.

When you share kindness it always
Finds its way back to you.

May your life be filled with much happiness!

LIVING IN THE MOMENT

I believe one of the best things we
Can do is to live in the moment: it does
Wonders when it comes to cultivating
A life filled with ongoing happiness.

Taking the time to reflect and be
Grateful for the things we have
Accomplished can also have an enormous
Impact when it comes to lifting our moods.

I'd strongly encourage you
To take breaks during the day.
Take small, bite-sized breaks
To ponder those happy memories
That you've collected in your life.

Then, make it a point to build new ones as well.
BEING REALISTIC

Let's face, though. We do "get down."
I believe we need to acknowledge that reality.

People will hurt or disappoint us.
Our hearts will be broken.
We may have to deal with a variety of losses.
Unfortunately, life is not all smiles,
And I believe a part of being happy
Means understanding and accepting
The reality of "hard times."

What exactly do you want? What are the specific results you
Wish to achieve?

If you only have a vague idea of what you'd like, you're
Simply not going to get it. For it's impossible to reach a
Destination that doesn't even exist.

To get what you want, you absolutely must define exactly
What that is. Give yourself a clear, meaningful target and
You'll then be able to successfully hit that target.

Put every one of your senses into richly experiencing, in
Your mind and in your emotions, the fulfillment of your
Goal. See in detail the colors, the sounds, the textures,
Tastes and aromas of what you seek to achieve, and feel the
Emotions you'll feel when you've arrived there.

Make the goal real in your mind. Integrate it into the way
Your body feels, with all the clear and wonderful details.

Give rich detail to your goal, and keep that goal close to
You at all times. Then you'll surely and steadfastly take
The actions that will indeed make it real in your life.

WEDNESDAY 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

PROVERBS 30:5-9
Every word of God is unalloyed, a shield to those who take refuge in
him. To his words make no addition, lest he reprove you and account
you a liar. Two things I beg of you, do not grudge me them before I
die: keep falsehood and lies far from me, give me neither poverty nor
riches, grant me only my share of food, for fear that, surrounded by
plenty, I should fall away and say, 'Yahweh-who is Yahweh?' or else,
in destitution, take to stealing and profane the name of my God.

LUKE 9:1-6
He called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over
all devils and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the
kingdom of God and to heal. He said to them, 'Take nothing for the
journey: neither staff, nor haversack, nor bread, nor money; and do
not have a spare tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there; and when
you leave let your departure be from there. As for those who do not
welcome you, when you leave their town shake the dust from your feet
as evidence against them.' So they set out and went from village to
village proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.

REFLECTION
God's words are timeless. His promises transcend all time and space.
The Bible is full of His promises. Jesus commissioned his Apostles to
go out to spread the Good News, to heal people and to take authority
over demons.

This is still true today. We are called to reach out and help those
who are diseased physically and spiritually. Is it not healing when we
compassionately caress the hand of an arthritic man? Is it not healing
when we sit down and listen to the woes and worries of a co-worker? Is
it not taking authority when we help rehabilitate a friend hooked on
vices?

Jesus does not promise that it will be easy. We will meet
disappointments and rejections. However, those of us who are willing
to follow his footpath will find a place in his kingdom.
